George Saville: "It’s a special feeling!"

Midfielder reflects on his first goal for the Hatters to seal Wigan win

George Saville points towards Liam Walsh as he celebrates his winning goal against Wigan.

George Saville described the “special feeling” he got when netting his first Luton Town goal to seal a 1-0 win over Wigan under the Kenilworth Road lights.

The summer signing from Millwall steered home Liam Walsh’s left-wing cross in the ninth minute to give the Hatters a third win from the opening four League One matches.

The 32-year-old told LTFC+: “It’s a special feeling. It never gets old, scoring. It’s nice to get it at home as well in front of the fans. An important win and nice to get a goal.”

It was the 42nd goal of a career that started at Chelsea and has taken in spells at Brentford, Millwall, Wolves and Middlesbrough, and Saville emphasised how vital it was to put Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Bradford behind us.

“It was important to bounce back after Saturday,” he said. “It was really important to not lose, after that disappointment. The reaction was brilliant and it’s all about getting three points.”

On settling in at the club, he went on: “I’m enjoying it, day to day loving it. It’s a great set-up, a great group of lads, great staff, so important we string performances together and get positive results, get the fans onside and get a good feeling in the building.”

And asked about the atmosphere at the Kenny, he added: “It’s a small ground, it’s compact and it’s very much like Griffin Park when I was at Brentford, it’s got a nice feel to it.

“It’s about putting on performances, winning games and getting that good feeling around the place.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s home game with Cardiff, who sit second in the table, one point above the sixth-placed Hatters, and taking that momentum into a what promises to be a tough fixture, he said: “100 per cent, especially in this league it’s all about momentum and rhythm, getting the result and breeding confidence.

“You can play well and not pick up a result, so for me, it’s all about getting results and then getting that momentum into our game.”
