The Hatters Under-18s stormed back to the top of the Youth Alliance with a superb 5-0 win over title rivals AFC Wimbledon.
Joe Deeney’s side went into the game in second place in the table, just one goal behind their opponents.
But it took the Town just five minutes to take the lead when Charlie Trustram’s pass in behind the Dons defence found Sam Anderson and he rounded the goalkeeper and finished from 12 yards.
Despite creating plenty of chances the Hatters could not find a second that their superiority deserved. Zach Ioannides crashed an effort off the underside of the crossbar and Christian Chigozie headed over from six yards as the Town pressed.
However, two minutes before the break the lead was doubled when Harry Fox teed up Tate Xavier-Jones and his cut-back found Trustram who made no mistake.
After the restart the Hatters continued to push for a third and on 57 minutes Anderson fed Xavier-Jones and, after taking a touch to steady himself, the striker drilled a shot beyond the Dons’ goalkeeper.
A fourth goal arrived almost 90 seconds later when Trustram drove forward and was fouled in the box. He dusted himself down before converting from 12 yards.
Brave goalkeeping from Lucas Thomas – making his first start since fracturing his skull in mid-October – denied the Dons from pulling a goal back but the Town ended the game strongly.
After missing several chances, a fifth goal arrived with a minute left when Xavier-Jones cut the ball back for Samuel Hincapie-Alfonso to smash home in his first appearance after three months out injured.
A delighted Deeney said afterwards: “I was happy with the manner of the victory. If you had said to me before the start you would take three points, score five and keep a clean sheet, I would have snapped your hand off.
“We should have added to our goal tally, but what impressed me most was the boys’ determination to preserve that clean sheet, right towards the very end of the game.”
The Under-18s’ now make the trip to AFC Wimbledon next Saturday for the reverse fixture.
