Teenager midfielder Jake Richards on what it meant to score his first goal in Luton colours at Stockport

Jake Richards was so happy to score his first goal for the Hatters that he didn’t quite know how to celebrate.

The 18-year-old became the youngest player to score a league goal for the Town since Keith Keane netted against Bristol City 21 years ago when putting us into the lead during last weekend’s 3-0 win at Stockport.

But the midfielder could not hide his delight after meeting Cohen Bramall’s left-wing cross to put the Hatters on their way to victory at Edgeley Park with his first strike since joining from Exeter in the summer.

“I think it was relief if anything because it was a long time coming to score my first goal as I’ve been here a while,” said the youngster.

“All of the emotion came out, a knee-slide and then to celebrate with the fans – I couldn’t have asked for much more.

“Obviously we went into the game with a job to do. We didn’t care that they were top of the league because we know what a squad, a team and the quality we have, and it showed.”

Richards, who has now started in three of the last four matches under Jack Wilshere, was influential throughout the victory in the north-west, laying on the third goal for Izzy Jones to seal victory in the closing stages.

“It’s been something we’ve worked on in training so it’s great to see these things come off,” explained the midfielder.

“I know Izzy’s got the pace and power and I was able to produce a bit of magic to find him on the underlap and score.”

Having led 3-0 in their previous game against Forest Green only to be pegged back at one stage at 3-3, Richards admitted the team and the management made absolutely sure there would be no repeat having got into such a commanding position again.

“The manager said at half-time to go and enjoy it, maintain the energy but don’t do another Forest Green!” said Richards.

“Kal said to use every tackle to get the fans with us and I think that worked – especially Ted’s tackle at the end which was top.”

Given Richards’ glowing reputation – the teenager was named the League One apprentice of the year last season – and following the appointment of former England international Wilshere, many onlookers are expecting even greater things from him – including the player himself.

“I think it’s ideal for me and the way I play,” he said. “Since the coaches have come in it’s been brilliant.

“There’s the little details that give me the opportunity to have confidence and freedom in a role that I’m not used to but I’m adapting to and enjoying.”
