Sol Davis came through 75 minutes of action in the reserves win against Southend United

Sol Davis and Peter Holmes both successfully came through their first game on the comeback trail, during our 2-1 reserve team win with Southend United

Davis, who has been out of action with a knee injury, completed 75 minutes of action whilst Holmes, who has been missing because of a hamstring strain, played 80 minutes and both are now likely to come into contention for the first-team trip to Preston North End.

Dean Morgan's brace helped Luton maintain their 100% record in the Pontin's Division after he scored with a last minute penalty and hit a sublime free-kick to cancel out Lee Bradbury's strike in the first half.

Report below

Luton go in search of their fifth straight win in the Pontin's Holiday Combination division, against a Southend United side that sit just one place above them in the table.

The Hatters have included Sol Davis and Peter Holmes in their starting line-up as both players make their long awaited comebacks from injury. Dean Morgan, David Bell and Leon Barnett are all thrown into the team.

Luton have made an encouraging start to the game with David Bell looking sharp in midfield. Within the opening two minutes the former Rushden midfielder is the provider as Matthew Keeneford and Dean Morgan both squander early chances.

Morgan himself is already proving to be a real handful as Luton bombard the Southend penalty area. The former Reading midfielder is getting a rare opportunity to play in attack and it is his mazy run past two Southend defenders that almost sets-up Keeneford, who is unable reach the loose ball.

The first real chance of the game arrives on nine minutes. Morgan is again at his best as he cuts inside the Southend defence from the right flank and tees up Holmes whose first-time shot from 25-yards narrowly sails over the crossbar.

Southend have rarely threatened in the opening 15 minutes and show no signs of breaking down the Luton defence. Dean Brill has been a spectator for most of the game as Luton look in full control.

AFTER 15 MINS: SOUTHEND 0 V 0 LUTON

Southend's first opportunity of the game sees a tame header from Phil Anderson travel wide of the target after Mitchell Cole's dangerous looking corner eludes everyone in a packed penalty area.

The home-side have now begun to pick up the pace and Cole shows great awareness after the midfielder cuts back a cross to the waiting Lee Bradbury whose first time shot from the edge of the area is safely gathered by Dean Brill.

GOAL - Southend take advantage of some sloppy Luton defending to break the deadlock on 23 minutes. Mark Wright's left wing cross is almost turned home by Lawson but his header rebounds off a post and falls kindly to the feet of Lee Bradbury, who is quickest to react to fire home from 12-yards.

AFTER 30 MINS: SOUTHEND 1 V 0 LUTON

Luton's response to going a goal down is encouraging and Holmes almost beats Welch from 25-yards on 31 minutes with a curling effort that clips the top of the woodwork.

GOAL - The visitors are now back on level terms and it takes a sublime Morgan free-kick to get Luton off the mark. The midfielder shows great ability to exquisitely curl home from 25-yards as Welsh is left with no chance.

Morgan is enjoying a fine game and looks dangerous every time he picks up the ball. On 37 minutes, his turn and shot almost gives Luton the lead but on this occasion Welsh makes an impressive save.

Against the run of play, Southend almost retake the lead just moments before the half-time whistle. Jay Smith bursts through the heart of the Luton midfielder to crack a low drive narrowly wide of Dean Brill's left post.

AT HALF TIME: SOUTHEND 1 V 1 LUTON

Luton almost make the perfect start to the second half when David Bell fires a 25-yard shot straight over the crossbar after Southend fail to clear a free-kick.

Southend go even closer just moments later when Lawson's header cannons the crossbar after Wright delivers a pinpoint cross from the right flank. Hatters shot-stopper Dean Brill is totally beaten by the header as Luton's defence are caught napping at the back post.

The woodwork is hit once again on 52 minutes. On this occasion, Ryan Charles is unfortunate not to get his name on the score sheet when he almost fires home the rebound after Morgan's shot from inside the penalty area is initially saved by Welch.

The game is now flowing from end-to-end and Mitchell Cole should have done better on 55 minutes when a cross-field shot brushes the side netting.

AFTER 60 MINS: SOUTHEND 1 V 1 LUTON

Davis is caught out of position as Southend almost take the lead on 67 minutes. The Luton full-back is unable to prevent Lawson from firing across the visitor's goal after a surging run into the heart of the penalty area.

Substitute Joel Ledgister goes even closer for the home side on 70 minutes as the striker, with time and space to take aim, fires agonisingly over the crossbar with Luton's defence holding back.

AFTER 75 MINS: SOUTHEND 1 V 1 LUTON

Both Sol Davis and Peter Holmes have been withdrawn from the action and look to have come through unscathed.

However Southend are now finishing the game stronger than their opponents as Luton's inexperienced defence begin to tire.

Mounford goes close with a header on 86 minutes that narrowly fails to hit the target after Danny Stevens delivers a cross from the right wing.

GOAL - Luton are awarded a penalty in the closing stages of the game as Deeney is sent tumbling down under the challenge of Lewis Hunt. Morgan makes no mistake from the spot as he fires home to maintain Luton's 100% record in the Pontin's League.
