The Hatters' reserves maintained their good form in the totesport.com Combination with a comfortable victory over Northampton Town at Kenilworth Road.
It was the second-string's fourth successive win as a strong side fielded by Kevin Watson made light work of the Cobblers with two goals from Liam Hatch and one a piece for Matthew Barnes-Homer and Asa Hall.
However, it could have been a much different game had Hatters goalkeeper Shane Gore not kept out Gary Mulligan's well-hit penalty on 39 minutes after Gavin Caines was harshly adjudged to have handled.
Two minutes later Hall came agonisingly close to putting the Town in front but saw his clipped effort from the edge of the penalty area come back off the crossbar.
But not to be outdone, the Hatters made the visitors pay for their earlier miss two minutes before the break when Hatch raced onto a long pass from Godfrey Poku to slide the ball home from an acute angle.
The Hatters began the second half in much the same vein and it took them just two minutes into the second 45 to double their lead when Hatch netted his second of the afternoon when knocking home the rebound after Barnes-Homer's shot was parried by Cobblers goalkeeper Chris Dunn.
Hatch was denied his hat-trick on 50 minutes when Dunn did well to keep out the striker's fierce angled shot and the goalkeeper then denied Hall and then a smart snap-shot from Mark Nwokeji on 64 minutes as the hosts pressed.
But the visiting stopper could do nothing about the Town's third on 69 minutes when Barnes-Homer robbed Liam Ruddick of the ball down the left, surged into the penalty and fired home a super finish from a tight angle.
Barnes-Homer was all of a sudden brimming with confidence and he hit the side netting on 72 minutes before finding Nwokeji with a great pass that saw the striker curl over a minute later.
It should have been 4-0 on 77 minutes when Ryan Charles raced clear before Barnes-Homer his shot from the rebound blocked.
However the Hatters' fourth did arrive on 80 minutes when Hall blasted home from the edge of the penalty after taking a square pass from Hatch.
Northampton continued to rally in spite of heavy pressure from the Town and they managed a consolation on 82 minutes when Mulligan crept up on Craig Nelthorpe's blindside to finish past Gore.
"I'm pleased with the attitude of the senior players today," Watson said afterwards. "They showed a good professionalism and with it being a reserve game towards the end of the season there is sometimes a tendancy to cruise through games like today but that didn't happen.
"I thought Northampton did very well for a young team. They played at a good tempo but we kept going and by the end of the game we looked very strong and fit and capable of scoring a lot more goals.
"You have no divine right to win games like this but the attitude and work-rate from our players were spot on.
"Shane's made a really good save from the penalty to keep the score goalless and that was the catalyst for us to go on and win the game."
