NEILSON DELIGHT AT RESERVES
First Team Coach Alan Neilson was delighted with the reserves' 1-0 win over Peterborough which kept his and Kevin Watson's side in the hunt to win the totesport.com Combination title.
Aidan Quinn's goal was enough too give the young Hatters side all three points and Neilson is looking forward to Thursday's clash with local rivals Watford which could see either side lift the East Division crown.
He said: "It was a battling performance and Aidan Quinn scored a great goal but pulled a hamstring doing it.
"It was good second half display and sets up Thursday's match with Watford. We need to win, they need to win, and Wycombe need to win on Wednesday, so it promises to be an exciting end to the campaign."
And the First Team Coach explained the tactical switch that saw captain Ian Roper moved into attack as the Hatters chased a winner.
Neilson said: "We were at a stage that we weren't threatening their goal as much as we wanted too so we went 4-3-3 and put big Ropes up front and two minutes later we scored what turned out to be the winner.
"Ian leads by example. Everyone knows he is a no-nonsense defender. He has continued to do well whether he plays for the first team or in the reserves.
"He was unlucky to lose his place in the side but I'm sure he'll get a chance to get that back."
Neilson and Watson's unbeaten run in the Combination has now stretched to 11 games and Neilson thanked all the players that have been involved during the pair's spell in charge.
He added: "It's a great run we've been on since Christmas and all the players: first teamers, reserve players and youth players have all done really well. Let's hope it can continue for one more game.
"Maybe a few fans can get down to Kenilworth Road and cheer us on."
The match with Watford takes places on Thursday at Kenilworth Road and kicks off at 2pm.
