A self-confessed Hatters fan, he made his first team bow in a 1-0 defeat at Southampton in the FA Cup third round in January 2010.
Largely used in the cup competitions in 2010/11 he scored his first Town goal in a 4-0 FA Trophy win over Uxbridge, going onto score a second goal in the tie.
Impressive performances in pre-season saw Watkins force his way into Gary Brabin's first team squad at the beginning of the 2011/12 season.
He scored his first senior goal in the 5-1 win over Southport and days later signed a new and improved two-year deal.
