MONEY TALK

Posted on: Sat 13 Mar 2010

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to all supporters to Kenilworth Road for today's Blue Square Premier match against Wrexham.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to Dean Saunders, his players and staff, directors and supporters of Wrexham and wish them a safe journey back home to North Wales.

This afternoon's match gives us the opportunity to build-on two successive victories both earned in hard-fought style.

The wins at Hayes & Yeading and against Forest Green, on Tuesday, have propelled us up to third in the table and further cements our place in the promotion Play-Off places.

We believe our destiny is in our own hands and every single member of the playing squad, management team and club staff are all pulling together to ensure our ambitions and goals are realised.

After our meeting with Wrexham this afternoon we have six of our last 10 matches at Kenilworth Road.

We all know that form at home has been a disappointment over the course of the campaign but having that advantage could be key our success in the next two months.

I say it week-in, week-out but your support - home and away - has been absolutely phenomenal this season and the envy of not only all clubs in this division and above and it is exactly that kind backing we need between now and end of the season.

I often think that the supporters' role is underestimated but believe me: the players feel privileged to play for a Football Club that pulls an average of 7,000 people at home games.

That should be more enough motivation for them to go out and bring success to this wonderful club - your support deserves it.

I spoke about my feeling following the victory at Hayes & Yeading in my last programme notes but after seeing one result in particular on Tuesday night it just goes to show how funny this game we all love is.

Although we all knew that we should have beaten Hayes in more convincingly fashion given our dominance and chances, many hadn't given Garry Haylock's side a hope at Oxford.

Obviously it was a pleasant surprise to see them win and with other results going in a favour our hard-fought win against Forest Green became even more crucial.

Make no mistake. As I said to the media afterwards the most important scoreline on Tuesday evening was ours.

Given that a victory looked unlikely at one stage we were absolutely delighted to secure all three points against a side fighting for their lives at the bottom end of the table.

I warned everyone prior to Tuesday's match that Forest Green would prove to be tough opposition and no doubt we will face similar challenges between now and the end of the season.

One of those challenges will be getting used to the Kenilworth Road pitch. Those who watched Tuesday's win will no doubt agree with me when I say it is incredibly difficult to play the free-flowing football we'd all like to see us play.

The players deserved a huge amount of credit for battling away until the very last minute. Those battling qualities will stand us in good stead which once again goes to show how committed and focused this group is at fighting to the end.

There is no doubt the pitch will have an influence on the way we play but with your support and understanding you can help ensure the team finishes as high as possible in the table.

As ever, and as you always do, get behind the players.

Enjoy the game.

Richard.
