MONEY: WE NEED TO START SCORING

Posted on: Fri 05 Mar 2010

Richard Money has challenged his strikers to start hitting the back of the net and fire the Town to promotion this season, starting at Hayes and Yeading United tomorrow.

The boss has become frustrated with the lack of goals his side are putting away as the Hatters look to end a run of four games without a win at Church Road.

"Not one of our strikers is scoring goals on a regular basis and saying to me 'I should be in your team'," Money told the media at Friday afternoon's press conference.

"We know we need to score more goals and we know we have to make sure we do in the last 13 games of the season.

"We have the capability to. We're just waiting for two of them to really start firing that sparks it off for us.

"The forward players are fully aware of their responsibilities.

"We've got Tom Craddock, Matthew Barnes-Homer, Mark Nwokeji, Liam Hatch and Kevin Gallen: that should be enough to make it happen.

"It gives us plenty of options and you can take your choice. That is the beauty of the group - they can all offer something different.

"But any striker's job is to score goals and not one of them is hitting the back of the net regularly enough at the minute."

It remains to be seen if Money goes with the same personnel that started Tuesday night's goalless draw at Mansfield Town but one player who definitely won't be featuring will be captain Kevin Nicholls.

The manager revealed the 31-year-old will go for an operation next Friday on a knee injury that saw the skipper miss the stalemate at Field Mill.

He joins sidelined duo Ryan Charles and Lewis Emanuel who are both are unlikely to feature again this season, according to the Town boss.

Saturday's visit to newly-promoted Hayes & Yeading will the first time the two sides have met.

Garry Haylock's side have rubbished pundits' pre-season tag of them being the league whipping boys with some sterling performances and as a result hold a position well away from the BSP dropzone.

"They score a lot and they concede a lot which suggests it will be an open game," Money said. "They try and play football and on their day - like everyone else in this league - they can be dangerous.

"They've had some mixed results recently but no doubt they will raise their game against us.

"It's not an easy place to go that's for sure.

"But from what I saw at Mansfield I'm quietly confident we can go there and do well.

"We'll take big support down there just like we did at Crawley.

"We didn't perform that day so we owe it to give something back to those fans and put in a really good show."

Money confirmed that striker Steve Basham, who is currently on-loan with Haylock's side, is not eligible to feature in Saturday's clash.

And the Town boss is relieved that that's the case. Basham has netted six times since joining United.

"He's a good player and I'm thankful he can't play against us," admitted Money.

The game is the last of three successive fixtures on the road for the Town.

And with four of the next five games at Kenilworth Road, Money knows how important the next month is for his side.

"We're reached a point in the season that we've challenged the group to really push on," he said.

"We've got to cement out position but it's not going to be easy: there are a number of other teams in contention.

"After Saturday we have eight of the last 12 matches at home.

"A club of our stature and with the amount of quality in our squad should be looking to push on from here."
