Mike Newell was happy with his side's hard fought victory over Port Vale.

"You get games where you struggle and it was quite a flat atmosphere," commented Newell. "Port Vale didn't bring many and when it is a little flat like that you have to generate your own atmosphere.

"The players plugged away and they stuck at it. In the end it was a great goal to settle it but we would have taken any sort of a goal.

"We have led the division since the start and I think I am right in saying we are the only team in the country who has done that. It doesn't matter where we are now, it is where we are in May that is important.

"We have ground out a result and people will have turned up today expecting us to turn Port Vale over but football isn't like that. They set their stall out early on to be difficult to beat and they were, in those situations you have to be patient.

"Calvin Andrew is raw and we felt that we had performed well in the two games before the first team, as well as for the reserves and he has got goals for the youth team so we decided to give him a chance."
