A relieved Richard Money hailed his side's efforts in the last-gasp 2-1 victory over Forest Green Rovers as "terrific" as they earned three vital points to send them into third place in the BSP.
The points - made safe by Tom Craddock's 90th-minute winner - were even more important given the results elsewhere in the division with promotion rivals Oxford, York, Kettering and AFC Wimbledon all losing.
But it was his players' tenacity and honesty that the manager was delighted with most.
"They deserve a fantastic amount of credit for digging out a result that looked unlikely," Money said afterwards.
"They have shown in the past they are prepared to go to the 90th-minute and they've done it again tonight.
"We've got a honest group of players and full credit to them.
"We have been very, very resolute and very, very professional.
"Results are what everyone in that dressing room is focused on. We'll keep pushing on and keep getting points.
"We haven't entertained the supporters tonight but give the players credit. We've given them three points.
"Teams around us in the league haven't.
"At this stage of the season it's all about winning football matches.
The Kenilworth Road pitch was covered in 10 tonnes of sand and, although Money admitted it was an improvement on recent months, it still made life difficult for the players.
"If anyone thinks you can play free-flowing football on that pitch then come to the stadium tomorrow.
"I will meet them personally and walk them across the pitch and they can have a look at it.
"It's impossible to play football on. You can't move quick enough.
"I'm not criticising the groundsman because he's done a great job to get it back to what it was like."
The Hatters' boss was pleased to hear the results from the other matches that had gone in the Town's favour.
But there was one result Money was interested in.
"The most important score of the night? Luton Town 2-1 Forest Green," he said. That's all we're bothered about.
"Obviously we need help from other people but it's in our own hands.
"We know we've got to play better than we did tonight but you've got to have admiration for the way we stuck at it tonight and earned three points.
"I don't think people give us enough credit. We came off the pitch at Hayes winning 3-2 and everyone thinks Hayes are rubbish.
"Tonight they have beaten Oxford, at Oxford.
"When you get to this stage of the season, when you are challenging for honours, it's nervy stuff.
"Go and ask York, Kettering or Oxford tonight."
