Honest Hatters boss Richard Money admitted his team's performance wasn't good enough despite coming away with three points following a gritty 1-0 win at Gateshead.

The Town had Tynesiders' goalkeeper Paul Farman to thank for the victory after he fumbled Claude Gnakpa's right-wing cross over the line in the 28th minute.

And Money was in no mood to celebrate after a disappointing display that he described as "rusty" and "dysfunctional".

"The only thing I am interested in is the result," he said afterwards.

"We know deep down that it wasn't good enough but it's good to get 90 minutes under our belts and out of the way.

"We said beforehand that the performance won't be the be all and end all because of we haven't played much football recently.

"I thought our goalkeeper and back four did very well but the rest of the teams' performance was dysfunctional and nothing like we are capable of.

"You can do all the training, and went to QPR and played on a nice pitch, but you can't replace the heat of the battle and in all honesty we did look a bit rusty.

"That was Gateshead's third match this week and we've only played three league games since the beginning of December.

"The likes of Kevin Nicholls, Kevin Gallen and Ed Asafu-Adjaye could be fit to return for the Histon game so that will give us more options."

However, the Town boss was pleased with the way his side dug in to defend their lead as Gateshead pressed for a late leveller.

"I'm glad we've seen the result through," he said.

"We showedgreat character to see it out but we know we got the breaks today and thankfully our hard work and endeavour has been rewarded with the win."

The biggest break the Hatters were handed was the winning goal.

"You don't like to see those kinds of goals go in," reflected the Town boss. "We would obviously have been more happy to have seen us score a cleaner goal.

"But, to be honest, I think we were probably due one. We certainly haven't had one go in like that for us since I've been here."

While the Hatters chief hinted at the arrival of new centre-half next week, hisfinal words were to praise the 569 travelling fans who had made the 500-mile round trip to back the side.

"They never cease to amaze me," he said. "I'm sure we'll take more to Histon on Wednesday.

"They have seen a different-type of Luton Town performance this afternoon, especially when we didn't have the ball, but we've shown a deep commitment and come away with the result.

"I'm sure they are pleased with the result at least."
