Michael Spillane returned to his parent club Norwich City after the Hatters' 2-0 defeat against Brentford on Saturday.

The 20-year-old defender recently signed a new two-year contract with the Canaries - who were relegated from the Championship in their final match of the season - after impressing Norwich boss Bryan Gunn with his performances at Kenilworth Road.

Spillane spoke after the final day of the season loss at Griffin Park about the match and his time at Luton.

"It's frustrating, we weren't at our best today," bemoaned the Ireland U21 international.

"The pitch didn't help us whatsoever; we couldn't get it down and pass the ball. It was not a good game and it's a shame that it was the last game and I didn't enjoy it that much, but never mind."

Despite admitting that he hadn't enjoyed his final match in Luton colours, Spillane made it clear that he'd enjoyed his time with the club and praised the Hatters' faithful for their continuous support:

"It's been a really good season. We've had loads of highs and lows. But the highs, for me, have outweighed the lows.

"The Brentford fans were really loud but the Luton fans were unbelievable considering we've been relegated and they're the champions.

"I heard the fans throughout the match and even after Brentford scored I heard them singing still. They were in really good spirits and hopefully they'll come to the games next year."

The Hatters' players were then left to endure the scenes of euphoric celebration at Griffin Park, as the Bees lifted the League 2 championship trophy, but Spillane felt Brentford deserved their first place finish.

He said: "There weren't many teams in this division that I thought, 'they're good enough to win the league' but obviously someones got to win it and Brentford have proven it with their results. It's a tough league and they got the results so they are worthy champions."

Spillane will play in League 1 with the Canaries next season, but the Hatters will always hold a place in the heart of the 20-year-old and he offered his best wishes to the club for the future.

He said: "Luton is my team now. I'll support them and keep an eye on their results. I hope they go up and I wish them the best."
