HENDERSON: I WANT TO STAY
After the 1-1 draw with Rochdale, Ian Henderson rued the Hatters' missed chances in the first half and spoke of the challenges of playing for a team already condemned to relegation.
However, there was more positive news, as the 24-year-old reiterated his desire to remain at Kenilworth Road next season.
"I want to stay here," confirmed Henderson.
A standing ovation from the Hatters supporters marked the Town's final Football League match on their home ground after an 89-year spell, and Henderson praised the fans for their continuous support throughout the campaign:
"You saw the fans reaction at the end, all standing there, clapping and singing Luton songs. It's amazing and a great feeling to have when you've got fans like that backing you week in week out.
"Considering the situation we were put in at the beginning of the season, fair play to the fans, the staff, the directors and the players."
After a first half of dominance over promotion chasing Rochdale, Henderson was frustrated that the Hatters let another home lead slip:
"We should have taken more chances. There was no pressure on us as we've been relegated and we came with a free spirit and showed the manager what we can really do.
"We had a few chances between Chris Martin, Tommy (Craddock) and myself which we could have done better with. But we went 1-0 up and we really should have kept hold of the lead in the second half.
"We've had too many draws this year. If we were to try and turn those into wins then you never know what might have happened. We're going to be positive and keep on going until the end."
The former Norwich City winger admitted the difficulties of gearing up for matches with the club already relegated - but explained that less pressure rests on the players' shoulders now and reserved no excuses for the team not holding onto their 1-0 lead:
"It is hard, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't, but it also gives you freedom, you go out and you've got no worries as such. But relegation is very hard to take as a player.
"We've put a good account of ourselves in both games against Rochdale and Wycombe. We were excellent against Wycombe in the first half and they hit us with a sucker punch with a long ball, and it was similar today, they were going direct.
"You can take loads of things into account; the weather, the pitch, the players. We're out there, we've got to do a job and we take full responsibility."
