Hatters manager Mick Harford was left frustrated as his side fell to a "sucker punch" as promotion-chasing Wycombe earned a narrow victory at Kenilworth Road.

Despite dominating possession the Town could not find a way through the resilient visitors' defence leaving Harford to reflect on an eighth home defeat of the season.

He said: "I'm sure Peter Taylor will agree when he does his interview that was one of the most one-sided games I've seen this season in terms of possession and the way in which we tried to win the game.

"It was difficult to break them. They hardly came over the halfway line in the second half.

"It doesn't take a genius to work out, we had one of our best passing moves in the first five minutes and they were standing in the penalty area."

Harford, however, was happy with his players' performance against the Chairboys despite already knowing that they will be playing Conference football next season.

He said: "The biggest thing I'm pleased with is that we went out there and showed effort, commitment, work-rate, togetherness and spirit.

"The players are absolutely devastated in the dressing room knowing they've lost in that manner.

"No disrespect to Wycombe but they have probably gone the longest in terms of direct football and we dealt with it comfortably apart from one lapse.

"And the lad's mis-hit the shot. That's the way it went for us tonight.

"We didn't create a lot of chances tonight but we had the possession but overall I was pleased with the performance."

And the manager believes if they play like they did against the Wanderers then there is no reason why the Town cannot register victories in the last two fixtures of the campaign.

He said: "If we play like that we'll beat Rochdale and we'll beat Brentford. Tonight we just fell for the old sucker punch."
