Mick Harford admits it will be back to basics for his team after a poor performance against Hartlepool on Saturday in which his side lost 4-0.

The Hatters were given a football lesson by Hartlepool, who were always in control of a one-sided affair.

Richard Barker put the home side ahead from the penalty spot, but a three-goal blitz in twelve second half minutes gave Hartlepool the goals their possession deserved.

On-loan Alan Thompson scored a sensational free-kick, which was added to by Joel Porter before Barker grabbed his second of the game late in the match.

And the result left Harford with lots to think about and admits that the lack of central defenders is seriously showing.

The Luton boss said: "That result been coming for a while. The boys in the dressing room are very down.

"I have told the players in no uncertain terms that the performance today was unacceptable - at the end we were all over the place.

"We gave away free kicks in dangerous positions and went to ground on too many tackles. They were better than us and deserved their win but we were poor.

"I've said to the players - it's back to basics.

"We need to get a team shape together and start again; we must get that belief and passion back."

Harford also added: "I have got a lot to say about how this club has been run over the past two years but I'll hold my thoughts on the subject until next week.

"It is very difficult when you have only got one centre half in the squad because the team was always under pressure, as the ball never goes back.

"It is hard, you need a player who is commanding in that position. There are too many strikers here and not enough centre backs."

But the Luton boss has assured supporters that his squad will go continue to fight on this season.

Harford added: "Our hands are tied by an embargo at the Club. What we have got is what we have to work with and it is going to be hard.

"All I can promise to the Luton Town fans is that we will be trying valiantly for the remainder of the season."
