There was injury time heartache for the Town's Under-18s as their pre-season campaign continued with a disappointing defeat against Nottingham Forest on Friday afternoon with an injury time header being the difference between the two sides.
Town started much the brighter and could of been ahead within three minutes, Alex Lacey's inch perfect diagonal pass drifted into the path of Liam Toomey. The forward did well to hold up the ball and set the ball to Ryan Dasilva who hit the ball first time and unluckily saw his shot bounce back off the post.
Town weren't to kept out for much longer, the influential Matt Harriott fed the ball down the side of the centre backs to Jordan Patrick who lost his defender and then squared the ball to Liam Toomey who bundled the ball home.
Town were dominating their opponents and should have doubled their lead further after Christian Tavernier slid a perfect ball to Toomey who this time was denied by a great save from the goalkeeper after going through one-on-one. Lacey was denied from the resulting corner, after Dasilva's first corner was cleared, he put the ball back into the box and Lacey's point blank effort was somehow saved by the Forest goalkeeper.
Forest slowly began to grow into the game and were looking dangerous on the counter attack and eventually brought the game level. A great first touch from the Forest forward created a bit of space inside the 18-yard box and thumped the ball home. Worse was to follow, for the only time in the game Tavernier didn't track his runner from midfield and the Forest midfielder looped his header home over the hapless Kidd.
Undeterred Town went back about getting back into the game and McAdams delivered a good cross to the far post where Dasilva made a good connection on the volley. Once again the Forest keeper showed safe hands to hold onto the ball. Town weren't to be kept out for long, Dasilva cleverly linked a ball around the corner to Toomey, his effort was saved but the ball fell to Harriott who finished the move well.
The second half was a much more even affair, Forest could have retaken then lead on a couple of occasions only to see their efforts rebound off the crossbar and post. Town also had chances as Harriott and Tavernier dominated in midfield, but Yamfam, Harriott, Toomey and Patrick were unable to find the target with each of their efforts.
Heartbreak came for Town in injury time, after clearing a corner the ball was sent back in from the right side and Forest headed home from close range.
Youth team manager Martin Prickett said afterwards: "I though the lads were absolutely terrific today, we played really well and deserved nothing less than a draw out of the game. It was great to play a proper game of football, both teams tried to play and it is refreshing to play against an opponent who looks to play through midfield and play with good movement.
"I thought Matt Harriott and Christian Tavernier were excellent today, they got the balance of midfield right, moved the ball well and both showed they have a terrific range of passing creating many chances for the forwards. The two of them ran the game today.
"I was also really pleased with Dasilva's contribution. He got into areas that were hard to mark and linked play really effectively. Defensively we have worked really hard so far and the boys are starting to get a good team shape and are hard to play against which will bode well for the season."
