BEDFORD TOWN 0-1 LUTON TOWN

Posted on: Sat 17 Jul 2010

Danny Crow's second goal in as many games helped the Town to their second friendly win in three days with the only goal at Southern League Bedford Town.

The diminutive striker was in the right place at the right time to head Andy Drury's fine right-wing cross just before the half-an-hour mark from close range.

Bedford were enjoying themselves against a strong Hatters side and in Dan Walker were carrying a real threat going forward.

He almost put the Eagles ahead on 28 minutes when racing into the penalty area but quick thinking from Mark Tyler saw the Hatters goalkeeper save well.

And that proved costly, as a minute later, the Hatters scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game when Crow planted a header beyond Ian Brown.

Back came Bedford though and they should have levelled matters on 35 minutes when Ian Draycott somehow skied a shot over the crossbar with the goal gaping following Graham Clarke's low square pass.

The second half was littered with substitutions by both sides but was still dominated by the Town.

And they could have doubled their lead a minute from time when Eagles goalkeeper Brown made a superb double save to deny firstly JJ O'Donnell and then Kevin Gallen.

Full report to follow. For minute-by-minute analysis, see below.

Result from the New Eyrie

Bedford Town 0

Luton Town 1 (Crow 29)

FULL-TIME whistleBedford Town 0-1 Luton Town - It's all over at the New Eyrie and the Hatters have ended up 1-0 winners. Stay tuned for all the reaction and photographs.

90 mins - Yet another change for the Town as Nathaniel replaces Toner, who has done well again in the middle of the park this afternoon. He does things simply and effectively.

89 mins - Almost 2-0 to the Hatters with a minute left and Bedford have goalkeeper Brown to thank for a superb double save. Firstly Watkins crosses for O'Donnell to shoot straight at the keeper before the stopper does even better to keep out Gallen's placed effort.

88 mins - Shot from Daniels has Tyler worried from 25 yards but it whistles narrowly over the crossbar.

85 mins - Still the Hatters on top. Sorry I can't give you anything more detailed but not a lot has happened. Still the Town lead.

82 mins - No more chances to report but another sub for the Hatters: goalscorer Crow is withdrawn for Watkins.

78 mins - Still the Town press in search of a second and Poku should make it 2-0. Howells does well to centre a cross from the left which finds Poku at the back stick but, with time on his side, he can only side-foot straight at Brown.

74 mins - The Hatters are still well in control despite their slender lead as Bailey tries his luck from distance like he did at Hitchin on Thursday but this time he arrows a shot over the Bedford crossbar. Unlucky.

73 mins - Seventh change for the Town: it's Lacey on for Newton and fills in at right-back.

72 mins - And then half a sniff for Bedford as Blackett does really well with a crucial intervention, sliding to tackle Draycott as the striker was about to pull the trigger.

70 mins - As I was saying there really hasn't been much to shout about this half and that's summed-up Pilkington's wayward left-foot shot from the edge of the area that lands up nearer to the corner flag.

67 mins - There's been a real dearth of chances to report so far this half as the Hatters make their sixth change of the afternoon with O'Donnell on for Fred Murray.

63 mins - Fifth change for the Town as Poku replaces Keane, who gets a generous round of applause from the away support in the crowd.

59 mins - Hoyte keeps getting in the way Hatters shots and again takes one in the head from yet another effort from Gallen from outside the area.

58 mins - Another hald chance for the Town as Gallen and Crow again link-up well eventually leading to Gallen striking a shot that hits Hoyte on the head and away to safety.

56 mins - Tyler's been a virtual spectator this half so far but he gets his hands warm for the first time aftr Walker - Bedford's star turn in the first half - drives a left-foot shot goalwards that the Town stopper plucks out of the sky well.

54 mins - It's still all the Hatters here as they continue to probe looking for another opening. Gallen does well to hold the ball up and feeds Bailey who sends a cross back into the penalty area that falls at the feet of Gallen again but the striker swings a boot but fails to connect.

51 mins - The attendance at the New Eyrie this afternoon is a respectable 845.

49 mins - Bright start to this second period for the Hatters as Crow, who is looking hungry for more goals, plays a swift one-two with Gallen before firing a shot from the edge of the area that is saved by Brown, diving down to his right.

47 mins - Those changes therefore mean: Tyler in goal, a back four of Newton, G. Pilks, Blackett and Freddie Murray, a midfielder quartet of Bailey, Keane, Toner and Howells with Gallen and Crow up top.

46 mins - We're back underway for the second period here at the New Eyrie and the Town have made four changes at the interval. Off go MBH, White, Drury and Craddock and are replaced b Howells, Blackett, Bailey and Gallen.

HALF-TIME whistle BEDFORD TOWN 0-1 LUTON TOWN - It took a while to get going but this pre-season friendly has finally got going...just. And it's the Town who have the lead thanks to Danny Crow's 29th minute header. They'll be plenty of changes at the interval no doubt so stay tuned for all the updates.

44 mins - More of the same from the Town as Newton does well to intercept the danger down the right before crossing for Crow who heads straight at Brown from 12 yards.

43 mins - Half a chance for the Hatters to double their lead as Newton sprints up the right flank to find MBH but the striker - playing left wing this afternoon - can only side-foot a shot wide of the post.

41 mins - Nothing to do with the game but tea and biscuits have arrived in the press box. Lovely stuff.

39 mins - Drury has again looked the biz for the Town today and he forced Brown in the home goal into evasive action for first time. Keane sprays a stupendous pass into the path of Crow who squares to the Hatters' number 11 who thumps a shot which is beaten away by Brown. Good stop. Good move.

35 mins - Oh dear. Bedford should be level. Another counter-attack full of purpose sees Daniel beat White down the right. He squares to Clarke who in turn plays a simple pass across the face of goal to an unmarked Ian Draycott who somehow fires over the crossbar with the goal gaping from six yards. What a let off for the Town.

33 mins - The Town have imposed themselves on this now and are confidently passing the ball around in search of a second before the break.

29 mins GOAL! GOAL! Bedford 0-1 HATTERS - Well, that's football. Bedford miss the best opportunity of the game and the Town go up the other end and take the lead. Drury beats his man down the right and whips in a high, perfect cross that is on a plate for Crow who nods home from close range. Two in two for the diminutive striker.

28 mins - Best chance of the game so far and it falls to Bedford. Walker, who has looked impressive for the Eagles breaks clear from a Hatter corner and feeds Draycott. Walker then gets the ball back off his strike-partner before hitting a shot straight into the body of the on-rushing Tyler. Good move, good save.

26 mins - Back come the Town though as Keane plays a nice through ball into Craddock's path. He ghosts past two players before rifling a shot goalwards that is blocked by Hoyte, the Bedford centre-half.

24 mins - We're looking for a goal to liven this game up a bit and Bedford come close with a decent chance as Ian Draycott feeds in the dangerous Walker who hits a shot just wide from the left-hand edge of the six yard box. That wasn't too far away.

20 mins - We've been looking around the ground for something exicting to tell you and we've spotted Claude wondering around the perimeter of the pitch shaking hands and talking to supporters.

19 mins - I'll be honest with you. This isn't the most enthralling of spectacles so far. Still 0-0.

15 mins - A bit more pressure for the Hatters now as they respond to Eagles' threat. Firstly Toner sees a shot blocked from the edge of the area before a Craddock effort suffers the same fate as it's headed behind by home skipper Lawley.

13 mins - More good work from Walker down the left for Bedford as he runs past White at pace but can only drag a left-foot shot wide of Tyler's left-hand post. Encouraging stuff from the home side.

11 mins - This game is getting going now and it's Bedford who are threatening. Firstly Walker is denied by a latch-ditch intervention from Newton before the Eagles' number 11 almost finds team-mate Daniel but brave goalkeeping from Tyler snuffs out the danger. Still goalless.

8 mins - The Hatters are playing the ball around nicely enough so far. Bedford have lasted longer than Hitchin, anyway. On Thursday the Town were already 2-0 ahead by this stage.

7 mins - A composed start from the Southern League Premier hosts. They're eager to get forward and put pressure on the Town defence. They'll be happy with this so far, that's for sure.

4 mins - We're only four minutes in and the ball's duff, much to Freddie Murray's bemusement. New balls, please.

3 mins - First attack for the Town as Newton, high up the pitch, rolls the ball into the feet of Craddock who hits a first-time shot straight into the arms of Brown in the hosts' goal.

1 min - The Hatters are lining up as follows: Tyler in goal, a back four of F. Murray, Pilkington (captain) and Newton, a midfield of Barnes-Homer, Keane, Toner and Drury with Crow and Craddock in attack.

1 min whistleAnd we're off as the Town get us under way here at the New Eyrie. Enjoy the updates.

15:09 HERE THEY COME

Delay over, out come the two sides.

15:02 KICK-OFF DELAYED

We've just been told we won't be kicking-off until 3:15. It's all those latecomers from the Bedford River Festival turning up.

15:00 INITIALS

With two Murrays and two Pilkingtons at the club now I need to remember to put their initials before their surnames. There's no Adam Murray today but Freddie plays and George Pilkington plays and Kevin doesn't.

14:59 JUST THE FOUR

We're a minute from kick-off but only four Town players who are starting the game are on the pitch at the minute: Tyler, Craddock, Drury and Freddie Murray.

14:50 COLOURS

It's the away white and navy shirts, navy shorts and navy socks for the Town this afternoon.

14:43 SPANISH STAR?

The Eagles' number 19 this afternoon is Raul. Judging by the lack of Spanish journalists and photographers present I am assuming it's not the Raul. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

14:38 FILLING UP

A fair few people are making their way through the New Eyrie turnstiles as the sun begins to shine on the green turf. The players are being put through their paces in a two-sided match refereed by Alan Neilson.

14:21 WEATHER WATCH

Cloudy, slight breeze with the sun trying to peek through the cloud.
