MONEY ON HITCHIN TRIUMPH

Posted on: Fri 16 Jul 2010

After seeing his side register their first victory of pre-season, Hatters boss Richard Money was happy with the way in which his players went about their business in the 5-1 win over Hitchin Town.

"I enjoyed it," he said afterwards. "We went about it in the right manner and all the senior players avaiilable either had an hour or 30 minutes which is what we wanted.

"It was a good day for fitness. We trained in the afternoon having given them Wednesday off after arriving back from Portugal and some of what I saw tonight was very good.

"It was two good goals that got us started and I thought we kept the ball really well.

"Hitchin too their credit played well. After all they won 100 points last last season so they have some good players.

"But tonight we showed that we've signed some good players too and they're bedding in really well.

"I think pre-season is not only just about fitness but confidence, and strikers thrive on that and that won't do Danny Crow any harm.

"The two strikers who played the first half [Crow and Matthew Barnes-Homer] have showed to the other two [Tom Craddock and Kevin Gallen] that they're not shoo-ins for selection this season."

Three trialists - goalkeeper Matyan Estherhazy and midfielders Stefan Bailey and Ciaran Toner - were on show at Top Field with the latter two earning praise from their potential new gaffer.

"Stefan worked hard in Portugal. He's got some good attributes, is a good athlete and a good size. He's looking for the opportunity to kick-start his career and he'll be with us for another week.

"Ciaran is one I've been chasing for a while, he's been at Rotherham on trial for the past week. He's got great experience and is economcal and sensible with a calming influence with and without the ball.

"I thought he did really well. Hopefully we can find some room for him if we can persuade him to come to us."

Four players expected to be in the squad were unavailable with the manager explaining the reasons behind the absenses of Mark Tyler, Claude Gnakpa, Dan Gleeson and Lewis Emanuel.

"Lewis is no longer at the club," Money said. "He was meant to report to training to give him an opportunity to prove his fitness and he hasn't been seen so that door is closed.

"Mark, Claude and Dan all picked up minor knocks in Portugal but should be ok next week."

The local media were also keen to hear the manager's thoughts on Crawley's supposed interest in Keith Keane.

"When we receive a bid I'll give some thought to it," he said.
