LATE GOAL EARNS TOWN DRAW

Posted on: Thu 15 Jul 2010

A goal two minutes into injury time from substitute Jordan Patrick earned a young Hatters side a 2-2 draw against Dunstable Town at Creasey Park.

The striker bundled the ball home from close range after Newman Carney's free-kick was spilled by the Dunstable goalkeeper who tried in vain to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

After a goalless first half the friendly sprung into life a minute into the second period when the Town took the lead through Adam Watkins who was on hand to steer home the loose ball after home stopper Paul Taylor - making his 500th appearance for the hosts - dropped Martell Powell's deep right-wing cross.

Two minutes later though, the South Midlands League Premier division outfit were on level terms when the referee awarded them a penalty after Town trialist Jimmy Thomas was adjudged to have fouled a home substitute and Jonathan Barnett converted from 12 yards.

As the Hatters - watched by Richard Money and Gary Brabin, together with Alan Neilson and youth boss Martin Prickett - rung the changes, Dunstable grew in confidence and they stunned the majority of the healthy crowd when they took the lead on the hour mark.

A long ball down the left flank eluded the Town defence, and after goalkeeper Lewis Kidd failed to clear, a Dunstable forward succeeded in the simplest of tasks of slotting home into an empty net.

More substitutes from the Hatters followed with Patrick and Ryan Dasilva causing the home sides problems as both went agonisingly close to finding a late leveller.

And all seemed lost until Carney - his father the Dunstable manager Grant - curled a free-kick goalwards that was dropped by the home goalkeeper and Patrick was quickest to the ball to tap in from a yard out to rescue a draw.

Hatters: Kidd, Deeney (sub Carney 64), Nathaniel, Poku (sub Dasilva 64), Thomas (Bufano sub 76), Bashir (sub Lacey 76), Powell (sub James 76), Bailey (sub Patrick 64), Quinn, (sub Yamfam 72), Watkins, O'Donnell (sub Harriott 46).
