HOME GROWN UPSON MAKES HISTORY

Posted on: Thu 24 Jun 2010

Former Town defender Matthew Upson has put himself in the Hatters' history books by becoming the first player to come through the youth ranks at Kenilworth Road to play in the World Cup finals.

The 31-year-old West Ham United centre-half put in a magnificent performance at the heart of the England defence as Fabio Capello's side ensured qualification for the knockout stages with a 1-0 victory over Slovenia.

While many products of the Town's youth set-up have gone on to earn international caps, Upson's appearance in South Africa further strengthens the club's reputation for nurturing talent.

Upson made one solitary league appearance for the Town, as a substitute in a 1-0 home victory over Rotherham United in 1996, before moving to Arsenal in May 1997 in a deal worth £2m.

Since then the current Hammers' captain has featured just under 250 times in the Premier League and earned 20 England caps.

And a delighted Hatters' Youth Development Officer Gregg Broughton had nothing but praise for the former Hatters' youngster.

He said: "Everyone at the Club is over the moon for Matthew, at Luton Town we see him as the ideal role model.

"After his big move to Arsenal he had to take a big step back. He went on-loan to Reading and then moved permanently to Birmingham City.

"Many young players think taking a step backwards is the catalyst for throwing in the towel but Matthew is not like that.

"We tell our youngsters that success doesn't always come in straight lines and even at this World Cup, Matthew has had to bounce back from the disappointment of not being selected in England's second group match.

"But he didn't throw his toys out of the pram. He kept his head down, he kept working and put in a superb display on Wednesday. I'd be very surprised if he didn't keep his place on Sunday against Germany."

Upson's involvement in the England squad this summer has, however, had a knock-on effect in the Broughton household.

The defender was due to be Gregg's brother's best man at a wedding on Friday but with West Ham man otherwise engaged, responsibilities will be falling on the Hatters' Youth Development Officer instead.

"I was always on standby," Gregg explains. "However, Matthew will be making an appearance via live video link from South Africa."
