YOUNG HATTERS HIT SPURS FOR SIX

Posted on: Mon 01 Feb 2010

With no league fixture in the Youth Alliance, the Town's Under-18s made light work of a young Tottenham team in a hastily-arranged friendly on Saturday morning.

After falling behind against the Spurs' Under-16/17 side at the Londoners' Myddelton House training ground, Martin Prickett's youngsters eventually ran out comfortable 6-1 winners.

Although most of Tottenham's players were a couple of years younger it was the hosts who started much the brighter as Town gave the technical academy players far too much time and respect whilst they were on the ball.

It was no surprise when Spurs took the lead on eight minutes. Both Ryan Dasilva and Taylor Nathaniel failed to stop the Spurs tricky right winger, who delivered from the right and although the first shot was well saved by Lewis Kidd, the hosts were first to the loose ball to tap home an easier opener.

However, the Hatters finally found their tempo and got on the front foot and pressed the young Tottenham academy players.

The equaliser came quickly after good pressing from Matt Harriott allowed him to steal the ball off the Spurs central midfielder, drive between two centre backs and skillfully lift the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper.

Town's momentum continued as moments later Liam Toomey was slid in behind the Spurs back line and he finished well under pressure. The Hatters' third came from a well-worked free-kick: Dasilva delivered a straight ball into the box, Alex Lacey flicked it on and it eventually fell to Jordan Patrick who fired home from close range.

Patrick wasn't finished there as he added Town's fourth. He made a darting run in behind the Spurs back line, avoided a couple of challenges, pulled a Maradona trick to go around the pouncing goalkeeper and slotted the ball home to make it 4-1.

The second half was a closer affair with Spurs having more meaningful possession in midfield without really causing Town a lot of trouble at the back.

Kidd was called into action to claim a couple of crosses and make a smart save to his left hand side, which allowed Town to maintain their advantage.

The lead was further extended after Taylor Nathaniel shot from a corner was half caught by the goalkeeper, who from his dive, managed to head the ball into his own net. Nathaniel claimed the goal, although if it were a Premiership match the dubious goals panel would have other ideas!

The scoring was complete when Adam Watkins notched the Hatters' sixth of the match when tapping home after excellent work from Toomey.

A pleased Martin Prickett said afterwards: "It is refreshing to come to a place where both teams try to play.

"So many of the Youth Alliance games are all crash and bash, where as today the ball spent most of the time on the floor.

"I am pleased with most of the performance, although I felt once we had such a big lead we should have been more disciplined in midfield and kept our shape better without the ball.

"Spurs had some terrific players who were hard to mark and we were not defensively good enough in midfield today as they played through us far too easily.

"Jordan Patrick and Liam Toomey both had good games, although they should do considering the quality they both possess.

"I thought Matt Harriott had a good game in midfield for us, he is starting to find his feet after an injury wrecked first half of the season and I'm delighted he is back and playing.

"On a personal note I would like to thank Tottenham for their ability to arrange a fixture at such short notice and then be excellent hosts.

"Hopefully we can have a closer relationship with them as a club which will benefit our recruitment and provide all our youth players with the opportunity to play against academy opposition."
