MATCH PREVIEW: GATESHEAD

Posted on: Fri 14 Aug 2009

Gateshead are another of the Blue Square Premier's newest entrants, having won promotion via the Conference North Play-Offs last season.

It won't be the first time a Gateshead side will play Conference football but the Tynesiders have been through some turbulent times to get back here. However back-to-back promotions will have Ian Bogie's side brimming with confidence on their return.

The Hatters have never faced Gateshead before but twice come across their predecessors, South Shields, in the FA Cup.However, even the latest of these encounters was almost 90 years ago.

The Tynesiders have had mixed fortunes through pre-season winning only four of their seven games, although one of the victories did come against Premier League opposition, albeit a youthful Sunderland XI.

Ian Bogie will be unable to rely on last year's main source of goals as 2008/09 Conference North Golden Boot Winner Lee Novak has been snapped up by League 1 side Huddersfield Town. The former Tynesiders marksman provided 27 of Gateshead's 81 goals last season.

For this season, until January at least, Bogie will look to Hartlepool's Michael Mackay who has signed a six-month loan deal at the International Stadium.

26-year-old Mackay has scored goals wherever he has played. He joined Hartlepool off the back of a 43-goal season with non-league Consett, but, despite this, found appearances few and far between at Victoria Park.

Mackay joins a host of other new faces at the International Stadium including defensive veteran Chris Swailes, who joins the Tynesiders from even further north, having spent the last two and a half year playing for Hamilton Academical, in the Scottish Premier League.

Despite a career which has seen him travel all over the UK, Swailes is a Gateshead lad and is guaranteed to bring a wealth of experience and ability with him as he looks to help his new team continue the success of the last few seasons.

The season so far:

At this early stage of the campaign it's obviously difficult to judge any side's performances - especially Saturday's visitors given the fact it will be only Gateshead's second fixture of the season.

While the Hatters were beating Mansfield Town at Kenilworth Road the Tynesiders had a night off after the Football Association had cancelled their away match at Chester City.

Ian Bogie's side arrive in Bedfordshire looking for their first goals and points of the season following their opening day defeat to Histon at the International Stadium where the visitors ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.
