IT ALL STARTS IN...34 DAYS...
It's now just four weeks and six days until the season gets underway on 8th August and our man with the stats Simon Pitts takes a look at the number 34. Enjoy!
34 - Just two post-war players have made exactly 34 League appearances for Luton Town, Matt Woods and Jean-Louis Valois.
Woods appeared during the 1965/66 after signing from Australian side Hakoah and later joined the other "Hatters", Stockport County.
Valois was signed by Joe Kinnear, and despite Carl Griffiths scoring a hat-trick, it was the Frenchman who stole the headlines for his debut performance against Torquay United. Luton won 5-1 on 22nd September 2001, and Valois netted a spectacular 35 yard strike in the second half.
34 - There are five players, post-war, that have made a total of 34 appeances for the Hatters, and they are Billy Hughes, Richard Langley, Alan Rivers, Chris Turner, and Jean-Louis Valois.
Hughes played in the 1947/48 season, making 31 League and three Cup appearances, before joining Chelsea.
Alan Rivers had been an apprentice at Kenilworth Road and made his debut in a 2-1 win at home to Newport County on 4th September 1965. He made his appearances in two seasons before joining rivals Watford. His only goal for the Hatters came in the 3-1 win against, coincidentally, Newport a year to the weekend since making his debut!
Turner had joined from Peterborough United and featured during the 1978/79 season where he made 30 League and four League Cup appearances. Five goals were scored in this season, all in the League, and all at Kenilworth Road.
Richard Langley only featured for two seasons for the Hatters after joining from Queens Park Rangers. He made his debut on the opening day of the 2006/07 season, as the Hatters won 2-0 against Leicester City. He scored his first and only goal of the season in the fourth League match of the season, netting a penalty in a 2-2 draw at home to Stoke. Langley made only one appearance the following season, and that was as a substitute on the final day defeat to Huddersfield Town.
Valois made all his 34 appearances in the League during the 2001/02 season, and netted six goals, most of which were spectacular efforts!
34 - Is the number of League Cup appearances made by Mal Donaghy for Luton. Donaghy made his first League Cup appearance in the 2-0 home win against Wigan Athletic on 29th August 1978. He scored his only two League Cup goals during the 1984/85 season, in a 4-1 win at Leyton Orient and a 3-1 win at home to Leicester City. Donaghy's last appearance for Luton, prior to his transfer to Manchester United, was also in the League Cup, a 1-0 win at Burnley on 11th October 1988. Donaghy did return, on-loan, to Kenilworth Road the following season but only made League appearances. The table puts Donaghy in third place for League Cup appearances, behind Brian Stein (35) and Ricky Hill (38).
34 - Only Peter Anderson has netted exactly 34 league goals whilst playing for Luton Town, and having joined from Hendon Town he made his debut in a 1-0 win against Watford on 13th February 1971. His only goal, from 14 appearances that season, came in a 2-2 draw against Sheffield Wednesday. The following season he netted 10 goals from 35 League appearances. As Luton won promotion in 1973/74 Anderson netted 11 goals from 41 appearances. He made his last appearance on 3rd December 1975, and scored twice in a 5-1 win over Charlton Athletic. Anderson was sold to Royal Antwerp to ease the Club's financial plight at the time.
34 - Bernard Moore was the first player to finish his Luton career with exactly 34 goals for the Club. Moore played in the early 50's and made a total of 85 appearances prior to his move to Brighton & Hove Albion. Tommy McKechnie featured for Luton in the early 1960's and scored his 34 goals from 146 appearances. McKechnie scored twice on his home debut in a 4-2 win against Derby County.
Scott Oakes will always be remembered for his hat-trick in the FA Cup quarter final against West Ham, but he too also netted a total of 34 goals for the Hatters. Oakes joined from Leicester City, and made his debut at Norwich City in a 1-0 defeat on 26th October 1991. He netted two goals during Luton's last season in the top flight, at Sheffield Wednesday and at home to Crystal Palace. Five goals followed in the 1992/93, with 13 the season after, including five in the FA Cup. He hit double figures again in 1994/95, with just four goals coming in 1995/96 as Luton were relegated from the then Division One.
34 - Luton have never finished a league season on exactly 34 points.
