35 DAYS TO GO...
It's now just five weeks - or 35 days - until the Hatters begin their Blue Square Premier adventure on Saturday 8th August so our man with the stats, Simon Pitts, takes a look at the number 35...Enjoy!
35 - Players making just 35 post-war League appearances for Luton are Laurie Sheffield, Matt Tees, Kim Grant, Chris Perry and Rossi Jarvis (to date!). Sheffield joined the Hatters from Oldham and actually made his debut against his former side on the opening day of the 1968/69 season. After 12 goals in 29 league appearances that season, Sheffield only featured six times in the promotion winning side of 1969/70 before moving on to Doncaster Rovers.
Matt Tees also played in this latter season following his transfer from Charlton. 32 of his league appearances came in this season, where he netted 11 goals.
Like Tees, Kim Grant was signed from Charlton, and he made a scoring debut in a 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town on 30th March 1996. Grant scored three goals in his first four league matches for the Hatters, but netted only a further two goals from the other 31 league appearances, before moving to Millwall.
Perry played for just one season following his free transfer from West Brom, during 2007/08, and he scored just one goal during his spell.
Rossi Jarvis joined from Norwich City last summer and during the 2008/09 campaign made 31 League starts with a further four appearances from the substitutes bench. His only league goal came at Barnet, although he also scored in both the League Cup and Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
35 - Trevor Aylott is the only post-war player to have made exactly 35 appearances for Luton, doing so in the 1982/83 and 1983/84 seasons. Signed from Millwall Aylott made his debut at home to Sunderland on 26th March 1983, and scored twice in 12 appearances at the end of the season.
The following year he scored eight goals from 20 League starts and netted in one of his three Cup appearances before his transfer to Crystal Palace. Going further back in history and Bill McCurdy made 35 appearances in the 1899/1900 season for Luton, whilst both Sam Bell and Billy Pease also made a total of 35 appearances between in the 1933/34 and 34/35 seasons.
Bell made his debut on the final day of the 1933/34 season and scored twice as the Hatters beat Bournemouth 2-0.
Pease had made 34 of his appearances during that season, netting eight times. The stats were reversed the following season as Bell featured 34 times, and netted 21 times, whilst Pease's only appearance was in the first round tie at Gillingham in the Division Three (South) Cup. Both players scored in a 3-1 win at Gillingham!
35 - The second most League Cup appearances for Luton is the 35 made by Brian Stein, who also netted 15 goals in this competition, five more than second placed Mick Harford.
Stein made his League Cup debut at Old Trafford, although it was against Manchester City in a Third Round, Second replay. His last appearance was in the 1991/92 season when he returned to Kenilworth Road for a second spell at the Club. He started the the first leg match at home to Birmingham and was a used substitute in the second leg at St Andrews. His last League Cup goals will be easily remembered as they were the two scored at Wembley in the 1988 Final against Arsenal! Stein's Luton career reads 496 appearances and 154 goals scored.
35 - Luton have never finished a League season on 35 points.
35 - Is the current record of consecutive home games where Luton have scored. The run started on 31st October 1931, with a 1-0 win against Bournemouth, and was eventually ended by Brighton as they held the Hatters to a goalless draw on 1st April 1933.
In this run Luton won 23 games, drew eight and lost just four, netting 104 goals along the way and conceding 46. This means that on average at least four goals were scored in every game! There was a 6-0 win against Swindon, with Tommy Tait scoring five, 6-1 wins against Reading and Torquay and a 7-1 victory over Norwich City. The biggest win, 8-1, was against Cardiff on 29th October 1932. The match to mention though was the 5-5 draw against Brentford on 1st February 1933, as this is still the only time that Luton have drawn by that scoreline in the league. Arthur Nelson scored twice and Tait netted his fourth hat-trick in this run of 35 matches!
