36 DAYS TO GO...
While you're waiting for the fixtures to be released why not have a read of Simon Pitts' statistics on the number 36 in our countdown to the start of the season...Enjoy!
36 - Is the most number of FA Cup appearances a player has made for Luton Town, Mal Donaghy, who scored three goals in this competition. Donaghy made a total of 488 appearances for the Hatters, a record that is only beaten by Brian Stein 496, Ricky Hill 508 and of course Bob Morton 562.
36 - Jesse Pye is the only Luton player to have scored exactly 36 goals for the Hatters, and he did so from 65 appearances in the 1950's. Joining from Wolves, Pye made his debut on the opening day of the 1952/53 season and played his last match at home to Derby Couny on 2nd October 1954, before a transfer to.......Derby! The visitors were obviously impressed, particularly as Pye had scored the second goal in Luton's 2-0 win!
36 - The only time Luton have ended a league season on 36 points was in 1978/79. The Hatters won 13 games, drew 10 and lost 19. Luton scored 60 goals and conceded 57 as they finished 18th in the Second Division (the Championship today)
36 - Is the current record for consecutive home league games that the Hatters have scored in! The run started on 18th November 1933 with a 2-2 draw against Bristol Rovers, and the last match where the Hatters scored was on September 7th 1935, a 2-1 defeat to Southend. The run ended two days later when Bournemouth came to Kenilworth Road and held Luton to a goal-less draw. An incredible 96 goals were scored by Luton in these 36 games, which is an average of 2.67 goals per game, whilst at the other end they let in 44, 1.22 goals per game.
36 - In a rather bizarre twist 36 is also the longest run of consecutive away league games where Luton have failed to keep a clean sheet! The Hatters held QPR to a goal-less draw on 30th August 1989, but didn't keep another clean sheet in an away league match until holding West Ham to the same scoreline on 17th August 1991!! Luton scored just 38 times in these matches, but conceded 80, winning just five times and losing on 25 trips!
36 - Luton have played each of the following clubs 36 times in the League: Blackburn, Bury, Derby, Grimsby, Man City and Sheff Utd. The most wins has come against Bury (17), whilst the least defeats are against Blackburn (11), who happen to be the only current Premier League team never to have won a League match at Luton. If it's goals you're after look no further than the ties against Grimsby, 121 goals in the 36 ties is an average of 3.36 goals per game, compared to just 85 goals (2.36 goals per game) in the ties against Derby County.
