Our countdown to the start of the season continues with Simon Pitts taking a look at number 37 in statistics...Enjoy!

37 - Just three players have made 37 League appearances and they are David Bayliss, Arthur Mills and John Taylor.

Mills played for the Hatters in the 1932/33 season and netted 14 goals from his appearances before he moved on to Gillingham.

John Taylor signed from Bradford City, and made his debut in the 1-1 draw at home to Watford on 26th March 1995. He scored three goals from nine appearances that season, and only finished on the winning side once, a 2-0 win against Notts County. Taylor made 28 more appearances the following season, without scoring, and was sold to Cambridge United after the Town were relegated from the then Division One (Championship now).

David Bayliss was signed from Rochdale and made his debut in the 2-1 win at Hartlepool on 8th December 2001. He made 18 appearances in total that season, as Luton gained promotion from the bottom flight at the first time of asking. Bayliss hardly featured over the next couple of seasons, and made just a further 19 league appearances. His only goal for the Club came in that epic 4-4 Carling Cup draw at Charlton in September 2003.

37 - Since the war five players have made just 37 appearances for Luton Town and they are Mike Harrison, Jake Howells, Roger Hoy, Richard Jackson, and Paul Showler.

Harrison was involved in the 1969/70 promotion winning team scoring four times in 12 appearances that season. Harrison joined from Plymouth Argyle and had made his debut on the opening day of the previous season. Harrison opened the scoring in a 4-0 win at home to Oldham, netting a penalty after fellow debutant Brian Lewis had been fouled.

Hoy played in the 1970/71 season, with just a Watney Cup appearance in the close season, pre 1971/72, adding to his appearance tally. Hoy joined from Crystal Palace and moved on to Cardiff City after just one season of action for the Hatters.

Paul Showler was recruited from Bradford City, and made 33 of his 37 appearances during the 1996/97 season, scoring six league goals.

Richard Jackson featured only for the 2007/08 season after his move from Derby, making 29 League and 8 Cup appearances before moving on to Hereford.

Jake Howells will be looking to increase his 37 Luton appearances to date after signing his first professional contract this summer. Howells made his debut on the final day of the 2007/08 coming on as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat at home to Huddersfield. Last season he made 20 starts and 16 substitute appearances in all competitions.

37 - Only one player has finished their Luton career with 37 goals, and that was John Aston.

After signing from Manchester United Aston scored on his debut on the opening game of the 1972/73 season. Luton had travelled to Cardiff City and, although Aston scored the opener from the penalty spot, Cardiff were soon level with their own spot kick.

The home side were stronger after the break and scored again to take the points. Aston netted 13 goals during that season, and then seven in all competitions as the Hatters won promotion to the top flight the following season.

His goal for the Hatters came in the 2-1 win at Oldham on the final day of the 1976/77, and ironically his last appearance in a Luton shirt, was just two games into the next season, on the same ground!

Aston moved to Mansfield after 201 appearances for the Hatters, 174 of which were in the League.

37 - Luton have finished a League season on 37 points on the following occasions: 1924/25, 1956/57, 1958/59 and 1990/91.

The most wins came in 1956/57 when the Hatters were victorious 14 times, and drawing nine matches.

In 1990/91 it was three points for a win of course, and the 10th win of the season, on the final day, at home to Derby was enough to save Luton from relegation. A certain Mick Harford scored an own goal as the Hatters won 2-0, the second coming from Lars Elstrup.
