40 DAYS TO GO...
There's just 40 days until the Town start life in the Blue Square Premier and our man with all the stats takes a look at the number 40 and relevant statistics in the Hatters' history. Enjoy!
40 - Twice Luton have finished a 46 game League season with only 40 points, and unsurprisingly both seasons ended in relegation. In 2000/01 Luton were relegated to the bottom flight after finishing 22nd in the then called "Division Two", now known as League One. The Hatters won just nine games, drew 13 and lost 24. Six years later and Luton were relegated from the Championship to League One after finishing 23rd, with just 10 wins and 10 draws.
40 - The only time that Luton have faced a 40-match League season was in 1987/88 when they finished 9th in the top flight of English Football with 53 points after winning 14 games and drawing 11. It's interesting to note that current Premiership sides Tottenham and Chelsea finished 13th and 18th respectively that season.
40 - Peter Anderson scored 40 times for Luton from 208 appearances. Anderson played between 1970-75 and scored twice in his final match for the Hatters, a 5-1 win at Charlton in December 1975 before being sold to Royal Antwerp to ease the Club's financial plight.
40 - Ron Futcher and Ray Whitakker both scored 40 League goals for the Hatters. Futcher netted his tally in 120 appearances, whilst Whittaker took 170.
40 - Four players have made 40 appearances for the Hatters. David Bayliss Phil Boersma John Taylor and Matt Tees. Tees netted 15 goals, with Boersma scoring 11. Taylor scored just four times, whilst Bayliss's only goal came in the epic 4-4 League Cup draw at Charlton during the 2003/04 season.
40 - Chris Martin made 40 League appearances for Luton last season, and scored 11 times. He finished as Luton's top scorer with 14 goals in total (apologies to Asa Hall but the goal you were originally credited with against Brentford in the JPT is officially being given to Chris now!)
