NEILSON ON HOWELLS' PRO DEAL

Posted on: Thu 11 Jun 2009

First Team Coach Alan Neilson believes the hard work starts now for Jake Howells after the 18-year-old signed his first professional contract with the Hatters.

The young Town left-footer agreed a two-year deal two weeks ago after making the breakthrough in the Hatters first team last season.

And Neilson, who was one of the men praised by Howells for nurturing him into Mick Harford's squad, thinks the future is bright for the Town's Young Player of the Year.

"Jake did fantastically well last season," said Neilson. "He started the season in the youth team and landed up going on to play almost 40 matches.

"His performances have warranted a professional contract and I'm delighted for him.

"He's a great lad and he has the potential to go very, very far in the game.

"But the hard work begins for him now that he's signed professionally.

"Any young player needs to keep improving their game and I am sure Jake will develop into a top-quality player.

"The youth system at this club has a great reputation and there is no reason why Jake cannot go on and enjoy a very good career.

"He can follow in the footsteps of a lot of players who have come through the ranks at Kenilworth Road.

"Next season will be tough but it should hold no fears for him as he now he has the experience of playing first team football alongside senior pros."
