HARFORD: NERVES WILL DECIDE FINAL

Posted on: Thu 02 Apr 2009

With the countdown to Sunday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final entering its final days, Hatters boss Mick Harford, captain Kevin Nicholls and in-form striker Tom Craddock gave their thoughts ahead of the Wembley final against Scunthorpe United.

"It's massive for everyone connected with the club, all credit to the players for achieving getting to Wembley," Harford said.

"We're going to enjoy it and we're going to try to win. We're going to try and win the cup final and then win as many league games as we can."

With the likes of Ian Henderson, Kevin Gallen and Mark Bower all unavailable for selection, Harford believes that this will make his job of picking a starting 11 slightly easier:

"We have a squad of 18 who are eligible for the game on Sunday, it's going to be hard to pick the team against a very good Scunthorpe team who'll obviously be coming down to win the game to.

"Fortunately for us, for the players who are available to play at Wembley we haven't got any injuries and I've got a fresh squad to pick from."

The Town boss also issued a quick word on the club's cup final opponents and called upon the fans to carry on their brilliant support on Sunday to act as the '12th man':

"They're a good team Scunthorpe with a very good manager and a great work ethic. They've got a fantastic centre forward who's on fire at the moment.

"But Scunthorpe haven't got to where they are just because of (Gary) Hooper and (Paul) Hayes, obviously they've made a big contribution, but I know Nigel (Adkins) very well, he'll have a good spirit and a good togetherness and he'll have his team fired up for the occasion.

"It will be a tense and nervy occasion. I think the team who can handle the tension most will come out on top.

"Our fans are the best fans in the country. They've had it tough with knockback after knockback through absolutely no fault of their own. They keep coming through the turnstiles and now they've got a deserved day out at Wembley and hopefully we can get the trophy for them."

Club captain Kevin Nicholls stated that Sunday will be another "proud" day in his career as a Luton Town player, the club, he said, where he most feels at home and where his heart lies, and the 30-year-old also reserved special praise for his teammates for their efforts this year:

"The lads have done their utmost to get to this cup final and we've got six games to try and keep our league status, which we will be trying to do.

"There's no 'I' in 'team' and I'd do anything for my teammates, that's why I know we can still stay up and also win this cup final."

Finally, 22-year-old striker Tom Craddock is raring to go and eager to step out onto the hallowed turf at Wembley this weekend:

"It's every little boy's dream; everyone's the same as a lad. There are certain things you dream about and stepping out at Wembley is one of them."

"Hopefully if we put in a good performance, we can get the victory."
