After experiencing an injury disrupted Luton career so far Sam Parkin is one man keen to show Hatters supporters what he can do given a regular run in the side and the former Chelsea man is hoping to get a good pre-season under his belt to prove what people have seen in glimpses is something he can display consistently.

Reporting back for pre-season is always a daunting experience when fitness programmes given for the summer months are reviewed and players find out how they've all coped with staying fit while being able to enjoy a short break from regular playing and Parkin is raring to get the season going.

"We were in last week for a little bit of fitness testing," Parkin explained as he answered questions about the players' return to action. "It's just good to be back and get everything underway again.

"Obviously everyone feels the first day a little bit but the way football is these days it's not just about running around laps of the field, it's a lot more scientific than that so hopefully it shouldn't be too bad.

"The break seems to go quicker and quicker every year but we have had quite a long break this year and now we are just a month away from the first game. The moment you get back in really everything is geared towards that first match of the season at the start of August, so it is good to be back and see all the lads with that in mind."

Whilst catching up with team-mates and comparing how everyone's summer break has gone is always on the conversation agenda in the dressing room, there are always new faces to welcome and some colleagues who have moved on but Parkin explains that is now part and parcel of the game with players generally on shorter contracts than a few season ago.

He added: "That's just football really, people move on. It's always a shame when you make new friends and then you only get to work with them for a year and then they're off somewhere else.

"I've wished all the lads that have left the best of luck at their new clubs, but I'm sure there are going to be more comings and goings in the next month or so. I expect some of the players will move on and there will be some new faces so it's going to be interesting in the next few days but I think we're all used to it in football, whether it's the players or the staff, people are coming and going all the time, that's just the nature of the job.

"Despite having a full pre-season last season I got injured during the first couple of games; in the end I played about 15-20 games - including reserve matches last year - so I was only around for just under half a season.

"I feel a lot stronger for those games I did play in now and I know my own body and the staff here know what I am about.

"I've been doing what I can to help prevent further injuries for the past six months and I'll continue to do that whether it is before or after training. If I need extra treatment the staff here will look after me.

"I have not really set myself any targets for the season, my record shows when I play games I score goals and I'm confident I'll continue to do that so targets aren't really something I go in for.

"The situation regarding the points' penalty means it looks like we're going to have to hit the ground running so hopefully we can have a similar start to what we did last year."
