The Hatters made one change to the side that had won 1-0 at home to Yeovil on New Years Day.
Skipper Chris Coyne returned to the side after a two match ban, replacing Jaroslw Fojut at the heart of Luton's defence. Fojut is now back at Bolton Wanderers after his loan spell came to an end. Stephen O'Leary replaced Paul McVeigh on the bench.
With Rafa Benitez ringing the changes, only Steve Finnan, Jamie Carragher and Xavi Alonso kept their place in the starting line up from the side that drew 1-1 with Wigan four days previously.
