It is with deep regret that we have to advise supporters, after a short illness, of the passing of former midfielder David Preece.
David, aged 44, was born in Bridgnorth, but joined Walsall from school and after a two year apprenticeship signed professional forms for the Saddlers in July 1980 as a 17 year old.
He made his League debut early in the following year, coming on as a substitute in a 2-1 win over Chester, before enjoying four years at Fellows Park which included appearances in the semi-finals of the Milk Cup.
Luton manager David Pleat had been given some money to spend to help bolster his struggling Division One side and after a bid of £150,000 plus forward Steve Elliott was accepted by Walsall, David made his way to Kenilworth Road in December 1984 to join a squad that was soon to include Steve Foster, Mick Harford and Peter Nicholas.
He made his Luton debut in a 1-0 home win over Aston Villa, scoring the only goal and went on to make 395 first team appearances for the Hatters including one in the Littlewoods Cup Final win over Arsenal in 1988.
The tiny but hugely talented midfielder also won England B honours during his time with the Hatters.
Following his testimonial game against Manchester United at the end of the 1994/95 season he decided to move to Derby before enjoying spells with Birmingham, Swindon, Cambridge and Torquay.
The Chairman, Directors, Manager and everyone at Luton Town Football Club send their deepest sympathy to David's family.
