WHAT ABOUT THE FANS? ASKS BLACKWELL

Posted on: Thu 21 Jun 2007

Luton manager Kevin Blackwell hit out at the new season fixtures that see the Hatters away all over Christmas.

On Boxing Day, Luton travel to Bristol Rovers and on Saturday December 29 to Port Vale.

"They haven't done us any favours, have they?" Blackwell said. "I just sometimes wonder what the computers are doing.

"We're talking about Christmas time when a lot of fans want to go and watch football, and we're away all over Christmas. And it's not as if we're just down the road where the fans can come and watch us. They've put us in Bristol and Port Vale.

"Leyton Orient are in our league. Surely that's a good game away or at home. It's disappointing. They talk about the finances of football, but this hardly helps clubs with finances, does it? You've got to think about the fans, but from Luton's point of view it doesn't look as if anybody's thought about the fans.

"Then we're away to Carlisle on a Tuesday night and they're here on a Tuesday night. It's a nonsense, a complete nonsense."

The manager was happier with the opening day, especially having the home game to kick off with that he had wanted.

"You couldn't ask for more than a home game to start with. What is interesting is that we're up against two teams that have been promoted in Hartlepool and Swindon. So in the first week of the season we play against three promoted sides, including Dagenham & Redbridge.

"I'm looking no further than Hartlepool United on the opening day and what comes our way comes our way."

Which sides does he think will be the ones to beat?

"There are big clubs with financial clout like Nottingham Forest and Leeds. They're going to be ones to look out for. But Doncaster Rovers are on a roll. Huddersfield Town are also a team that has more than the potential to play in a division above.

"Then there are also the teams that have come up. Hartlepool were on a fantastic run towards the end of last season. Bristol Rovers finished on a great high, so there's always someone who turns into a dark horse.

"And sometimes you see a team come up like Colchester did, straight through. That's a regular occurrence these days."

But he was happy to do battle with any of them.

"It's a strong league with some tough teams - but none tougher than Luton Town."
