Fifty years after appearing in the F.A. Cup final the Hatters' final game in their 89-year run in the Football League ended in defeat on a day when their opponents lifted the League 2 championship.

Two second half goals, from Karleigh Osborne and Adam Newton - the second in the final minute - gave the Bees all three points.

The Town huffed and puffed in the spring sunshine but for all their efforts failed to call home goalkeeper Ben Hamer into a save and the West London club were able to celebrate winning the title with a comfortable victory.

Hatters manager Mick Harford kept the faith with the same side that drew 1-1 with Rochdale last Saturday with Kevin Gallen in centre midfield in a 4-4-2 formation.

There were two changes in personnel on the bench, however, as Lewis Emanuel and Ryan Charles - back from a loan spell at Kettering Town - replaced Paul McVeigh and Rossi Jarvis.

Chris Martin - the Hatters' leading goal getter this term - and Michael Spillane were both making their final appearances in Town colours after spending the season at Kenilworth Road on-loan from Norwich City.

It was party time at Griffin Park as the Champions geared up for their end-of-match celebrations which would see them lift the League 2 title.

Meanwhile, the Town were playing what would be their last match in the Football League on the 50th anniversary of the club appearing in the F.A. Cup final at Wembley against Nottingham Forest.

As the two sides lined-up to shake hands before they commenced battle, a loud firework display went off in the centre circle, startling most of the Town players.

The end where the Hatters fans were congregated was still not full with many supporters battling through the congested West London traffic.

It was the Bees that kicked-off with the Town sporting their all navy away strip looking to end their last campaign in the Football League with a victory.

Brentford had the first chance of the game four minutes into proceedings when Billy Clarke, the striker on-loan from Ipswich, headed over Dean Brill's crossbar from six yards from Sam Wood's right-wing cross.

The Bees had certainly started the brighter of the two sides and Spillane had to be alert on eight minutes to turn behind a deep cross from Adam Newton before Clarke could get a shot at Brill's goal.

Strangely for the Champions they had failed to test Brill at all in opening 28 minutes and it was the Hatters fans - some dressed in fancy dress, others crowd surfing - who were in finer voice than their Brentford counterparts.

However, that changed on 32 minutes when a speculative volley from Wood from the left-hand edge of the area forced Brill into a comfortable save diving to his left to deny the Brentford man his second goal of the season. It was the first shot on target of the match.

Five minutes later a fine flowing move down the Bees left almost brought the opening goal for the home side but Brill got down well superbly to his right to palm away Clarke's shot from creeping into the corner of the net after Ryan Dickson's had sped into the area and cut the ball back for the striker.

The Town had failed to warm the hands of home goalkeeper Ben Hamer but on 38 minutes Martin's shot from 18 yards was blocked by Alan Bennett and two minutes before the break the Hatters' striker was booked by referee Scott for talking back to the official.

HALF TIME: BRENTFORD 0-0 LUTON TOWN

Bees boss Andy Scott made the only change for either side at the break bringing on Karleigh Osborne for Mark Phillips.

The Hatters kicked off the second period shooting towards their support and four minutes into the half good skill and close control from Tom Craddock fashioned a chance for the Town but the striker's cross drifted wide and the chance was gone.

Mick Harford made his first change of the game on 62 minutes when Lewis Emanuel replaced Ian Henderson in a switch that saw Jake Howells pushed forward.

Martin had a half-chance for the Hatters on 65 minutes when his turn and shot flew well wide of Hamer's right-hand post as the tried in vain to register their first shot on target.

The League 2 Champions had been subdued in the second period but on 73 minutes two of the Bees' substitutes combined to give them the lead.

Glenn Poole's floated free-kick from the right found Karleigh Osborne who rose highest in the penalty area to nod past Brill from six yards.

Harford made his second change two minutes later introducing Charles for Craddock and a minute later the Town came within inches of finding a leveller when Pilkington almost got a touch to Howells' right-wing corner.

With 12 minutes left the Hatters boss made his third and final change of the afternoon sending on Ian Roper for Pilkington.

The Town had looked livelier since Emanuel's introduction but the Bees applied the coup de gras in the final minute when Newton curled home the Champions' second of the game.

Hunt raced through on goal and squared the ball to his fellow winger all alone in space in the penalty area.

It looked as though the chance had gone begging for the Brentford man after the ball got stuck in his feet but once doing so he deftly curled home a left-foot shot beyond a motionless Brill.

Still the Town had a chance to grab a late consolation when Roper's knock-down fell Spillane but the defender could only hook a shot into the side netting.

The officials indicated there would be two minutes additional times but 90 seconds into time added on eager home fans had already started to make their way onto the pitch - despite being told not to enter the Griffin Park pitch by the stadium announcer - and referee Scott had no option but to blow his whistle for full-time, sparking scenes of jubilation on the turf.
