Luton Town picked up three points away from home, much to the delight of the fans, the team and everyone connected with the club.
The Hatters took an early lead thanks to a well-taken header by Sam Parkin.
Despite a few opportunities Gillingham failed to get back in the game, giving Luton well deserved win.
The Hatters made just one change to the starting line up from the side which saw them safely through to the second round of the Carling Cup, with Keith Keane replacing the injured Lewis Emanuel.
Luton got off to a dream start, scoring after just three minutes when Chris Martin made a superb run down the left-hand side before crossing to unmarked Parkin who cleanly headed the ball home.
A few minutes later the Hatters looked to double their lead when captain Kevin Nicholls made another good cross to Rossi Jarvis who just missed the header.
Gillingham's Mark McCammon tried to put the home side level just before half-time but failed to put his attempt the right side of the post.
HALF-TIME: GILLINGHAM 0-1 LUTON TOWN
A freekick by John Nutter, which connected with McCammon's head almost saw Gillingham back in the game. But to the delight of the packed away end Sol Davis cleared the attempt off the line.
Luton proved to any doubters how well they could work as a team when on the 70 minute a dangerous Gillingham cross into the area caused a goal mouth scramble. However the Hatters successfully blocked all in coming shots before Rossi Jarvis finally cleared the ball.
The visitors went straight on the attack and Martin was unlucky to see his attempt skim the goal.
