Hatters striker Paul Furlong continued his run of form in front of goal with his sixth strike of the season against Doncaster.

However it wasn't enough to give Luton a much needed win and instead had to settle for a share of the spoils after James Hayter gave Doncaster a first half lead.

Furlong, who celebrated his 39th birthday recently, stooped with a header midway through the second half, latching on to a Calvin Andrew cross from the left.

But despite bossing the second half, Luton couldn't find a winner and this result didn't do neither side much good with both teams struggling to find any consistency.

As expected, Hatters midfielder David Bell was ruled out after picking up a rib injury in the 0-0 draw with Yeovil on Tuesday night.

That meant the only change to the stalemate at Huish Park saw the return of Furlong, who completed his one match suspension on Tuesday night.

Doncaster made two changes from the side which lost to Walsall on Tuesday night with James Coppinger and Stephen Roberts replacing Paul Heffernan and Lewis Guy.

After a mediocre start from both sides, in which neither team really settled into the game, Luton eventually created the first opening where Darren Currie should have given the home side an early lead.

Eight minutes in and Furlong chased down a hopeful ball in the corner and managed to fire over a cross from the by-line that the former Ipswich midfielder should have buried with a free header from eight yards.

Luton soon found their passing game and a minute later, Furlong flicked on a long ball into the area which released Calvin Andrew and when the young striker pulled back a cross into the area, Dave Edwards had an eight yard side footed shot blocked by the Doncaster defence.

After a slow start, Doncaster began to get into the game and on 11 minutes Brian Stock's corner was only half cleared by the Luton defence and when the ball reached Roberts, the defender fizzed in a half volley that sailed inches over Ben Alnwick's crossbar.

Luton then had a half chance on 21 minutes when Andrew displayed great physical presence to win a towering header from a Chris Perry cross, which teed up Matthew Spring but his left footed drive was well off target.

The home side were then made to pay for their missed chances as Doncaster broke the deadlock on 27 minutes with a simple cross and header as Luton's defence was left motionless.

With Alan Goodall exposed down the left, Coppinger was given the freedom to whip over a cross that was met by a bullet header for Hayter from ten-yards, who was left totally unmarked.

Luton almost responded immediately when Andrew's delicate flick teed up Spring from 25-yards but after taking one touch to get the ball out of his feet, the midfielder failed to test Doncaster goalkeeper Neil Sullivan by firing over the crossbar.

Doncaster then hit Luton with a bombardment of pressure with Mark Wilson going close on three occasions, his best effort arriving on 39 minutes when, after linking up with Hayter, he fired over from just outside the area.

Luton were then firmly on the back foot and on 41 minutes, Doncaster somehow failed to double their advantage when a Stock corner caused confusion in the area as Coppinger had a shot blocked, then Hayter hit the inside of the post before Stephens put the follow-up header against the bar.

The home side almost got themselves back on level terms just before the break with Edwards sending a glancing header off target, but this was certainly a first half to forget for Luton, as boos rang out from the stands at the half time whistle.

AT HALF TIME: LUTON 1 V 0 DONCASTER

The opening ten minutes of the second half saw very little in terms of chances, despite Luton bossing possession.

The best effort arrived on 54 minutes when a loose ball was struck miles over the Doncaster crossbar by the onrushing Goodall.

As Luton continued to pile on the pressure, it was sensed that a goal was looming and it nearly arrived on 56 minutes when Robinson's cross needed just the faintest of touches as the rolled across the face of Sullivan's goal.

The goal then eventually arrived for the Hatters a minute later when a pass from Robinson picked out Andrew on the left and his pinpoint cross into the centre was met by Furlong's diving header, as he guided the ball into an empty net.

But Doncaster refused to be despondent and on 63 minutes Ritchie Wellens almost caught out Alnwick when the on-loan Tottenham goalkeeper had to stuck out a hand towards the inside of his near post.

On 72 minutes Spring hit a 25-yard shot over the bar after Furlong had laid off a delicate ball into his path.

But the Hatters still couldn't find a way through despite throwing extra bodies forward in a bid to clinch a winner.

Luton had shouts for a penalty waved away on 81 minutes when it appeared Wilson handled inside the area after challenging for a ball with Goodall.

Jaroslaw Fojut came close in the closing stages by heading wide from a Spring free-kick, but despite bossing the second half, Luton were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
