Warren Feeney scored his first goal in Luton colours to help the Hatters progress into the second round with ease following a 3-1 win over Leyton Orient at the Matchroom Stadium.
The Northern Ireland international scored either side of strikes from Chris Coyne and an own goal from Gary Alexander to seal their passage into the second round draw, which will be made on Saturday.
Coyne got the ball rolling for the Hatters with a sublime curling effort on the stroke of half-time before Feeney, thanks to the support of Enoch Showunmi, blasted home from six yards. This comfortable win was sealed on 75 minutes when Alexander headed past his own goalkeeper. Orient did grab a late consolation through Daryl McMahon
Luton boss Mike Newell made the promised changes to his side ahead of the game with Carlos Edwards, Keith Keane, Michael Leary and Shouwnmi all being drafted into the side.
The most surprising inclusion was that of Coyne. The Australian, who had been struggling with a hamstring injury, replaced Markus Heikkinen, who was rested, and partnered Curtis Davies in the heart of Luton's defence.
Leyton Orient boss Martin Ling made a number of changes to the side, who were surprise losers at home to Rochdale, with Craig Easton and Justin Miller both starting for the home-side.
Orient thought they had made the early break through inside the first minute when Efe Echanomi side footed the ball past Marlon Beresford. However, the home-side were denied by the linesman's flag, much to the disappointment of the Brisbane Road faithful.
Luton's opening effort arrived on 12 minutes when Edwards' cross from the right flank hit Feeney on the foot, looping above Orient goalkeeper Glyn Garner but going over the crossbar.
After 15 mins: Leyton Orient 0 v 0 Luton
In what was a scrappy opening 15 minutes, the game suddenly came to life when Michael Simpson tried his luck from 25-yards, stinging the hands of Beresford who diverted the shot over the crossbar.
The home-side began to spring into life and immediately tested Beresford once again when Shane Tudor flashed a shot over the crossbar.
Feeney saw a one-on-one opportunity saved by Garner on 18 minutes as the Hatters began to step up the pressure. That opportunity was quickly followed up by another clear cut opening as Showunmi blasted over from eight yards after being put in the clear by Davies.
After 30 mins: Lyeton Orient 0 v 0 Luton
Showunmi should have put Luton a goal in front on 34 minutes but the Nigerian wasted the perfect opportunity. After Kevin Nicholls' lofted a ball over the top of the Orient defence, Showunmi had time and space to test Garner but instead sliced his shot enabling Orient to clear their lines.
Luton were creating plenty of chances but had yet to really test Garner who, apart from a point blank save from Feeney, was enjoying a quite evening.
Dean Morgan came close on 38 minutes as another chance went begging for the visitors. On this occasion, Edwards provided the right-wing and after Feeney missed the header, the Luton midfielder fired from six-yards but saw his effort deflect off Miller.
It looked as if both sides would go into the interval level until Coyne stepped up on the stroke of half-time to convert a well taken goal. The Luton centre-half picked his spot from the edge of the area to curl home an unstoppable shot past Garner to give the visitors a slender lead.
AT HALF TIME: LEYTON ORIENT 0 V 1 LUTON
Luton came agonisingly close to doubling their advantage five minutes into the second-half as Morgan fired a 30-yard free-kick against the crossbar with Garner well beaten.
Leary tried to test Garner from 25-yards on 54 minutes but saw his shot comfortable saved by Garner as the Hatters continued to boss the start of the second-half.
After 60 mins: Leyton Orient 0 v 1 Luton
Just as Luton looked as if they were in control of proceedings, Leyton Orient began to get in the game and Echanomi was harshly adjudged to have brought down Coyne, when through on goal, although it seemed as if the Orient striker had gotten the better of the Hatters centre-half.
Echanomi was causing Luton all kinds of problems at the back with his pace and trickery and Beresford was called to make an important save on 66 minutes to prevent the Orient striker from getting the home-side back on level terms.
Feeney worked an opening for the Hatters on 69 minutes when his shot, from an acute angle, was stopped by Garner but the Northern Ireland international didn't have to wait long to get his name on the scoresheet.
Capitalising on a mistake from Garner, Feeney blasted home from close range on 71 minutes after Showunmi played the ball across the face of the goal as he shrugged off the challenge of an Orient defender.
The game was made safe by the Hatters on 75 minutes as a Nicholls free-kick from the right flank was headed home by Orient defender Alexander, who gave his goalkeeper no chance.
After 75 mins: Leyton Orient 0 v 3 Luton
Newell rested key players with the game safely in the bag as Russell Perrett, Peter Holmes and Stephen O'Leary were all given rare run-outs.
Orient, to their credit, continued to play attractive football as they went in search for a consolation and substitute Lee Steele test Beresford's awareness two minutes from time.
However, the game never looked in doubt in the second-half despite McMahon hitting a late goal for the home-side. The Hatters will now be hoping to square up against one of the Premiership big boys in the second round.
