Luton's awesome record at Kenilworth Road was never in doubt in this thrilling encounter as Norwich goalkeeper Robert Green had one of them games he will want to forget.
The England international was guilty of a major blunder midway through the first-half when he slipped at the vital moment to allow Carlos Edwards' 40-yard cross-cum-shot to fly into the back of the net.
However, Green could not take the solitary blame for Norwich's shocking display at Kenilworth Road, as the former Premiership side were guilty of some substandard defending that infuriated the supporters from Carrow Road and probably their manager Nigel Worthington
Luton's display was formidable in the first-half and further goals from Warren Feeney, Peter Holmes and Steve Howard put the Hatters firmly in the driving seat at half-time.
Norwich improved in the second-half but Dean Ashton's goal on 56 minutes and Ryan Jarvis flying header six minutes before the end proved to only be a consolation as the Canaries flew back to Carrow Road empty handed and somewhat embarrassed.
To compound Norwich's miserable afternoon, on-loan Tottenham defender Callum Davenport was dismissed with nine minutes remaining for a second bookable offence.
Luton went into the game without the services of skipper Kevin Nicholls who had been struggling in the build-up to the game because of a niggling foot injury.
However, Hatters boss Mike Newell was boosted by the return of Steve Robinson in the heart of Luton's midfield whilst Markus Heikkinen recovered from a knock to start alongside Chris Coyne in the centre of defence.
Norwich, with two wins from their last three games, made two changes to their starting line-up from the one that drew with Millwall at the weekend with skipper Andy Hughes and Ian Henderson both being recalled by Worthington.
Luton almost made the perfect start to the game when, inside the opening three minutes, Dean Morgan's deflected free-kick almost found its way past Green in the Norwich goal.
Luton were soon out of first gear after a rocky start to the game as Ahmet Brkovic's cross from the right flank was met by the head of Howard but the striker was unable to keep his effort on goal.
Darren Huckerby almost capitalised on a mistake in the Luton defence on nine minutes after Edwards' miss-kick enabled the former Manchester City and Leeds striker a sight at goal but dragged his shot wide of the target.
The visitors were soon taking the game to their opponents and Henderson beat Beresford with a thunderous shot just moments later but the midfielder saw his attempt come back off the crossbar.
Luton's bright start to the game was rewarded on 14 minutes when Feeney broke the deadlock. After the Norwich defence failed to clear their lines, Howard showed determination to whip a low ball across the face of the goal for Luton's Northern Ireland international to poke home from close range.
After 15 mins: Luton 1 v 0 Norwich
Norwich were still looking bright on the attack and the visitors wasted a glorious chance to be back on level terms when Dean Ashton squandered a one-on-one opportunity.
Moments later, the Norwich striker tried his luck from 40-yards with a thunderous free-kick that found its way past the Luton wall but narrowly missed the target.
Luton where in full control of the game when they doubled their advantage on 27 minutes in bizarre circumstances. As Edwards' cross from the halfway line looked to be travelling harmlessly into the arms of Green, the Norwich goalkeeper slipped at the vital moment to watch the ball travel over his head and into the net.
After 30 mins: Luton 2 v 0 Norwich
With Luton's fans mocking his every move, Green made a slight amends to his error when he made a vital save on 33 minutes by diving low to his right to keep out Peter Holmes drive.
Every slice of good fortune was going Luton's way as they soon began to carve open Norwich's wayward defence. The Hatters were making the former Premiership side look second best in every department as chants of 'Easy, Easy, Easy' rang around Kenilworth Road.
Luton extended their advantage further on 34 minutes as things got better and better for the home-side. Holmes went charging through the heart of the field, played a one-two with Feeney before drilling home from 18-yards.
With Norwich in complete disarray, Luton continued to take full advantage as Howard headed home his sixth goal of the season, towering over two defenders to connect with Holmes cross four minutes before the half-time interval.
When the referee brought first-half proceedings to an end, Luton received an awesome ovation from their supporters as Norwich fans vented their anger towards their players for a well below performance.
AT HALF TIME: LUTON 4 V 0 NORWICH
The visitors, as anticipated, came out strongly for the second-half after no doubt getting a half-time rollicking from by their manager although an Ashton free-kick that never troubled Marlon Beresford was all they had to show for their early pressure.
On 52 minutes, Beresford had to be equal with a cracking drive from Henderson, tipping a shot over the crossbar from 30-yards.
This looked as if it was never going to be Norwich's day when Brkovic, who had safely guarded the far post, cleared Ashton's header from Huckerby's corner off the line.
Ashton restored a hint of a comeback when he converted a sweetly timed shot from 30-yards that nestled itself into the corner of the Luton net.
After 60 mins: Luton 4 v 1 Norwich
Luton had the opportunity to restore their four goal cushion when Heikkinen almost guided Moran's corner into the back of the net but it was the Canaries who where threatening to produce a 'mini comeback'
Feeney's swinging 30-yard effort almost caught Green off guard as Luton tried to halt Norwich dominating possession.
Ashton turned across the face of the goal on 74 minutes but it looked as if the visitors were running out of ideas to try and salvage something from this fixture.
After 75 mins: Luton 4 v 1 Norwich
Norwich's misery increased when Davenport was dismissed for a second bookable offence after Howard was sent tumbling to the ground.
The visitors did restore more pride in their performance when Ryan Jarvis diving header flew past Beresford thanks to a pinpoint cross from Ashton.
However, Luton, in truth, never really looked troubled and Newell will have been delighted that their domination in the first-half was matched by their four goals, which killed the game off at the interval.
