HISTON PREVIEW

Posted on: Tue 13 Apr 2010

FROM BOTH CAMPS:

Richard Money: "It's another important game but as I've said our objectives won't change and we'll be ready. They're going to come and make life difficult for us. Would anyone expect anything less of them? They're fighting for their lives and will no doubt get plenty of bodies behind the ball but we've got to continue to do what we've been doing in recent weeks."

Histon assistant manager Ian Hart told cambridge-news.co.uk: "It's going to be a tough one.  Knowing us we'll go there and play really well. We went to Stevenage when no one gave us a prayer and gave one of our best performances of the season. The players are going to have to go out there and perform because they know we're in a situation where we've got to get some points. They have to have a positive attitude that they can get something out of the game. It we could get a point at Luton that would be a great result."

TEAM NEWS:

Hatters: The Town will wait on the fitness of French midfielder Claude Gnakpa after he limped out of Saturday's 1-1 draw at Tamworth. That could open the door to any number of players to fill the void on the right flank should Gnakpa not make it. Adam Newton, Rossi Jarvis and striker Kevin Gallen are all options for manager Richard Money with a strong squad at his disposal.

Histon: The Stutes are set to be without a number of key players including midfielder Andrew Tidswell and striker Lee Smith, who both have hamstring problems. Boss Alan Lewis is also likely to be without right-back Adam Bygrave (ankle) and Gareth Gwillim (knee ligaments).

Recent history:

The rise of Histon through the pyramid has been one of the biggest success stories in non-league football.

The Stutes were playing in the Eastern Counties League in the mid-1990's, winning promotion from Division One as runners-up in 1996/97 before going onto lift the ECL Premier Division title in 1999/2000 under current boss Steve Fallon.

That meant an elevation to the Southern League, where it took Fallon and the Cambridgeshire outfit four seasons to win promotion from the Division One East as runners-up in 2003/04.

Success soon followed the next season when they won the Southern League Premier Division to lift the title on the final day of the campaign.

By the now the Bridge Road faithful were now watching Conference South football at the start of the 2005/06 season - the highest point in the club's history - and a fifth place finish in their first in Conference South saw them qualify for the play-offs but they lost in the final to St. Albans City.

However, Stutes fans were not to be disappointed for long, though, when the following season they won the Conference South championship and thus earned their fourth promotion in seven years.

A seventh place finish in their first at Conference level saw further success flow for Fallon and co. last season - only to see their campaign end in play-off heartbreak.

They disposed two League 1 sides at Bridge Road in the FA Cup in Swindon Town and Leeds United, but, after a third place finish in the Conference, they lost out to eventual play-off winners Torquay United in the end-of-season lottery 2-1 on aggregate.

FACT: Histon's nickname, The Stutes, is derived from the club's former name Histon Institute - who were formed in 1904.
