MANSFIELD PREVIEW
FROM BOTH CAMPS:
Richard Money: "We have to roll up our sleeves and go and again. We've got to pull things together and get the team the way we want it. In the final third of the season we've got to push on. We are still aiming to get as many points as possible as we need to cement our position in the league. Mansfield are a big and strong team and we must meet that. They have a large squad to choose from. They will see it as a big game as they are on of the sides who will suffer in the league table should their six points from two wins over Chester be wiped out."
David Holdsworth: "We will prepare the best we can and have alot of respect for Luton Town and their players. They have alot of expectation on them and will want to bounce straight back up which will prove very hard. In the midfield we will have to match up and be stern. It's no good going gung ho against a decent side who can counter attack quickly. You have to be calculated and manage the minutes. It's certainly not advantage Mansfield. I'm sure Richard Money won't be over the moon about losing at Crawley but Crawley are a good side."
TEAM NEWS:
Hatters: The Hatters will be without captain Kevin Nicholls for the trip to Field Mill after suffering a knock to his knee in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Crawley. He joins Lewis Emanuel and Ryan Charles as the only senior players unavailable to Town boss Richard Money. The manager hinted in his post-match interviews on Saturday that changes would be made. Strikers Liam Hatch and Matthew Barnes-Homer came on to good effect as substitutes in the weekend defeat and could feature from the start but the Town chief is coy on his selection policy.
Mansfield: Defender Luke Jones is available for tomorrow night's game with Luton after completing a two-match suspension. Despite the return of Jones, it is a case of one in and one out for manager David Holdsworth as Andy Burgess will be ineligible to face his old club due to the terms of his permanent move away from the Hatters in January. The game will also come to soon for Oliver Hotchkiss, who is still feeling the effects of an ankle knock, and Jake Speight who underwent an operation on his knee a fortnight ago.
IN FOCUS
Nickname: The Stags
Manager: David Holdsworth
Ground: Field Mill
Last season: Conference 12th
2008/09 average attendance: 2,423
Pre-2009/10 BSP title odds: 14/1
Previous meetings:
Luton wins: 6
Mansfield wins: 9
Draws: 5
The Stags have the upper hand when it comes to the head-to-head record against the Town with nine wins to our six with the Hatters' latest victory the 4-1 win at Kenilworth Road thanks to two goal from George Pilkington, an own goal and a Tom Craddock penalty.
However at Field Mill the Hatters are looking for their first league win at Mansfield tonight.
Although the Town triumphed 4-3 in a League Cup Second Leg meeting at Field Mill in 1989, in the eight league meetings between the two sides at Mansfield the Hatters have lost six and drawn twice.
One thing is for sure is that there are always plenty of goals when the two sides meet. In fact in the last seven matches between the two teams 44 goals have been scored - an average of just over six goals a game!
Before August's win the Blue Square Premier, it rained goals the last time the Hatters beat the Stags - on Easter Monday 1st April 2002 - just two days after the Town clinched promotion at Swansea City - when Joe Kinnear's side ran out 5-3 winners.
Mansfield have won twice at Kenilworth Road but were on the losing side in September 1968 when the Hatters' Graham French scored one of the greatest goals in the Town's history during the 4-2 win.
Recent history:
Mansfield are in their second season in the Conference following their relegation from the Football League in 2007/08 which ended their 77-year stay among the 92 clubs.
Last season David Holdsworth - who took over in December - the Stags finished in 12th place in the table enjoying a fine home record but finding it difficult to earn results on their travels.
In fact they broke a club record by keeping six consecutive clean sheets.
The club were deducted four points by the Conference last season for fielding an ineligible player in their opening two games of the campaign in which they won and drew.
The Field Mill faithful last tasted success when winning promotion along with the Town in 2001/02 finishing in third place earning promotion to the then Division 2.
They only lasted one season in Division 2 before relegation back to the League's basement division - only for them to lose in the play-off final at the Millennium Stadium against Huddersfield Town on their first season back in Division 3 in 2003/04.
FACT: When the Stags were up for sale in 2008, one bidder, John Batchelor, planned to rename the club Harchester United - the name of the team featured on Sky One's football soap Dream Team.
