HISTON PREVIEW

Posted on: Tue 23 Feb 2010

FROM BOTH CAMPS:

Richard Money: "There does come a time when we are going to need to freshen things up with one or two changes. Tomorrow might be the time. At Histon, Hatch came on at half time and was real handful for them. That type of thinking will come into our planning. I don't think the vast majority of our supporters would accept that. I think we've got to stay true to our traditions and the values of this football club. If we've got Hatch in the team then maybe we can go a little bit longer."

Alan Lewer: "I saw Luton play on Saturday and they dominated the second half, but they got hit on the counter-attack. They play some lovely football, which is why they're up there, and we'll have to look at our midfield. Nicholls will look to pass the ball around, so we need to look at our options in there. If we show the commitment and the desire I know we're capable of, then we can compete with anyone."

TEAM NEWS:

Hatters: Richard Money has hinted that striker Liam Hatch could return to the starting XI after being left on the substitutes bench on Saturday. Claude Gnakpa missed that defeat to AFC Wimbledon and is likely to remain out. Lewis Emanuel is the long-term casualty so the manager has plenty to pick from.

Histon: Centre-half Adam Bygrave is suspended following his dismissal at Oxford, so Adam Tann is set to play alongside captain Matt Langston at the heart of the defence. Right-back Lanre Oyebanjo is a doubt and on-loan striker Charlie Sheringham could come in to partner Danny Wright up front.

Recent history:

The rise of Histon through the pyramid has been one of the biggest success stories in non-league football.

The Stutes were playing in the Eastern Counties League in the mid-1990's, winning promotion from Division One as runners-up in 1996/97 before going onto lift the ECL Premier Division title in 1999/2000 under current boss Steve Fallon.

That meant an elevation to the Southern League, where it took Fallon and the Cambridgeshire outfit four seasons to win promotion from the Division One East as runners-up in 2003/04.

Success soon followed the next season when they won the Southern League Premier Division to lift the title on the final day of the campaign.

By the now the Bridge Road faithful were now watching Conference South football at the start of the 2005/06 season - the highest point in the club's history - and a fifth place finish in their first in Conference South saw them qualify for the play-offs but they lost in the final to St. Albans City.

However, Stutes fans were not to be disappointed for long, though, when the following season they won the Conference South championship and thus earned their fourth promotion in seven years.

A seventh place finish in their first at Conference level saw further success flow for Fallon and co. last season - only to see their campaign end in play-off heartbreak.

They disposed two League 1 sides at Bridge Road in the FA Cup in Swindon Town and Leeds United, but, after a third place finish in the Conference, they lost out to eventual play-off winners Torquay United in the end-of-season lottery 2-1 on aggregate.

FACT: Histon's nickname, The Stutes, is derived from the club's former name Histon Institute - who were formed in 1904.
