MATCH PREVIEW v KETTERING

Posted on: Wed 02 Dec 2009

Following Tuesday night's results the Hatters know a victory over fifth placed Kettering Town will propel them back into the play-off places in the Blue Square Premier.

Unbeaten in five games under Richard Money, the Town will be looking to register their first home league win since 3rd October when goals from Asa Hall and Ben Wright saw off Tamworth at Kenilworth Road.

A disappointing defeat to Rushden & Diamonds and a draw last time out against Cambridge United have sandwiched a creditable 3-3 draw with Rochdale in the FA Cup.

With five games in front of the Kenilworth Road faithful between now and the New Year, now's the time for Hatters to kick-on and begin to claw back the points deficeit on those sides above them in the table starting against the Poppies tonight.

And that won't be easy, as the Northamptonshire side's 1-1 draw with Leeds United in the FA Cup on Sunday shows.

Newly appointed player/manager Lee Harper took over the reigns from Peterborough-bound ex-boss Mark Cooper last month with the Rockingham Road outfit holding the best away record in the division until victories last night for Oxford and AFC Wimbledon.

The Poppies have the best defensive away record in the league having only conceded eight goals in their 10 matches on their travels.

Their seven wins and a draw on the road is in stark contrast to a disappointing home record where they have recorded four wins, fours draws and three defeats.

With former Hatters favourites Sol Davis and Ian Roper making a return to Kenilworth Road for the first time since their departures in the summer, the game has the makings of an exiciting game at what will be a freezing cold night in Bedfordshire.

KETTERING: FORM GUIDE

L L W D D W

Despite losing their last two fixtures in the Blue Square Premier - both at home - the Poppies still hold a place in the Play-Off positions. It's an incredible run of form on the road, however, that is the main reason behind their success this season.

All six of their last league and cup games have been won, including at Redditch United and - impressively - Hartlepool United in the FA Cup. Four straight away successes in the BSP at Cambridge United, AFC Wimbledon, Eastbourne Borough and Hayes & Yeading have kept the Poppies firmly in the hunt for promotion as their home form continues to stutter.

Not since a 2-1 defeat at Crawley Town on 19th September have our visitors tasted defeat away from Rockingham Road.

The Hatters will need to be wary for the Poppies threat but can take heart from their last two league fixtures which have been lost to Hayes & Yeading and Kidderminster since Lee Harper took control.

TEAM NEWS:

Hatters: Matthew Barnes-Homer and Ashley Cain are in line to feature for the Hatters. With no fresh injury or suspension worries following Saturday's draw at Rotherham, only Mark Tyler (back) and Liam Hatch (ankle) remain sidelined giving Richard Money a strong squad to choose from.

Poppies: Lee Harper overcame a slight back problem to feature against Leeds United and should be fit  to feature at Kenilworth Road. The player/boss has no injury or suspension issues and is likely to name an unchanged side following Sunday's draw.

Tonight is the first meeting at Kenilworth Road between the two sides following last August's goalless draw at Rockingham Road.

Recent history:

After winning the Conference North title in 2007/08 the Poppies started their first campaign back in the Conference Premier after a five year absence with a storm and landed up finishing in eighth position.

Their heroics in last season's FA Cup led them to the fourth round where they gave Premier League Fulham a scare before losing 4-2 at Rockingham Road. They had seen off Lincoln City and the then League 2 leaders Wycombe Wanderers in the earlier rounds.

The Poppies faithful have certainly had plenty of ups and downs in recent years, with Paul Gascoigne installed as manager in 2005, Play-Off heartbreak in 2006/07 before winning the Conference North title at a canter collecting a division record of 97 points.

The club enjoyed several successful seasons in the non-league top flight during the 1980s and 1990s.

However, in the days where only one team was promoted to the Football League, the Rockingham Road faithful were denied promotion, finishing as Conference runners-up on four separate occasions in 1981, 1989, 1994 and 1998.

FACT: Kettering were the first English side to have shirt sponsorship, when in 1976, they were sponsored by Kettering Tyres.
