NOTTS COUNTY MATCH PREVIEW
After failing to take anything from the first home game of the season Mick Harford will be hoping to get back on track against Notts County and if his side can play to the levels seen against Port Vale then it's surely only a matter of time before that deficit is cut.
Notts County also lost their opening day fixture going down 2-1 at promotion favourites Bradford City. A brace from Bantams striker Peter Thorne, including a contender for goal of the season, had already ensured the points before Richard Butcher scored a consolation goal.
The defeat means County have won just three games in their last 15. Four points from their last two games last season helped ensure their league status, eventually finishing just six points above Mansfield, who are this season playing in the Football Conference.
Ian McParland took the reigns at Meadow Lane back in October, after a brief spell as caretaker manager at rivals Nottingham Forest earlier in the year. He was named Manager following the departure of Steve Thompson, who was relieved of his duties after a 3-1 home defeat, against Bury, left them just three points off the drop zone.
Despite three wins from his first five games County continued to struggle at the wrong end of the table, winning just nine of McParland's 38 games in charge.
Over the summer the Manager has worked hard to improve his squad bringing in four players including the experienced Russell Hoult and Jamie Forrester. He has also moved a lot of players out releasing seven including striker Jason Lee.
And following the opening day defeat he set out his targets for the season:
"I'm not displeased at all," he said. "There are obviously things we can get a little better at, and if we can hopefully we can end up near the middle of the table.
"We did ok, and if we can be a little more positive at times and improve on that final ball I think we'll get more goals."
It's been four seasons since these two clubs were in the same division, League One, and the last meeting came at Kenilworth Road in December 2003. A goal in each half from Adrian Forbes and Emmerson Boyce secured the three points on that occasion.
The previous match at Meadow Lane finished 1-1 with Tony Barrass cancelling out Chris Coyne's opening strike.
County's last win at Luton came in August 2000, Mark Stallard netting the only goal of the game but when it comes to the head to head, there's only one winner.
Of the 64 meetings Luton have won an impressive 33, with County winning just 13 while the other 18 have ended in draws and what the Hatters would give to make it 34 next week.
