Bernard Streten
A well regarded amateur international goalkeeper plying his trade with Shrewsbury, Bernard Streten was enticed to Luton following the recommendations made by his old team mate Frank Soo, who was by then on the books of the Hatters.
Although not very tall, Streten made up for his lack of inches with agility and bravery as well as a certain amount of showmanship and it was not long before he was a crowd favourite at Kenilworth Road and earning international recognition for England.
The Town were well off for goalkeepers at the time and Streten had to fight off the advances of Iorwerth Hughes, who was a Welsh international, and Ron Baynham, a fellow England international, during his time at the club. It is to his great credit that he managed more than 300 first team appearances for the Hatters during his 10 years here when you consider the opposition he was up against.
