Bob Morton

Long player: Bob Morton made almost 500 appearances for the Hatters

A true one club man, Bob Morton holds the appearance record for the Town which is likely never to be beaten. After signing from local club Waterlows as the war drew to a close, he eventually made 495 league appearances for the Hatters before bowing out as a 36 year old in 1964.

Equally as good at wing half and centre forward, Morton probably enjoyed his greatest headlines as a partner for prolific goalscorer Gordon Turner but was regularly switched by the Town as situations dictated. Unfortunately, this meant that the England selectors were never quite sure where to play him with the result that he was never picked for senior international honours which was a disgrace.

Several times during his career attempts were made to prise him away from Kenilworth Road but he always remained loyal to the club, who awarded him with a richly deserved testimonial match against FA Cup holders West Ham in 1964.

Luton Town league debut: October 30th 1948 v West Ham (away) won 1-0.
