CAPTAIN SPEAKING

Posted on: Mon 30 Aug 2010

Good afternoon and welcome back to Kenilworth Road for this afternoon's match with Hayes and Yeading United.

Due to programme printing deadlines we go into today's game not knowing how we faired at Tamworth on Saturday.

What I do know is it will have been a very a tough game if Tamworth play as well as they did against us last season, especially when we had to settle for a 1-1 at their place last April.

Today will be our sixth match in the space of 16 days. It certainly has been a very hectic beginning to the season but given our form at the minute we want to play as often as possible and build-up momentum.

Players like nothing but playing and believe me, when confidence high, there is nothing better than pulling on the shirt and playing football.

Last time out at Kenilworth Road we had to settle for a point in what was an entertaining game against newly-promoted Newport County.

In my column for that game I said we were going to expect a tough game and so it proved.

We were disappointed to concede a goal in the manner in which we did but to bounce back and restore parity within four minutes was an excellent riposte.

Zdenek popped up again with the goal and his height from set-pieces is going to be a massive weapon in how we attack corners and free-kicks throughout the season.

Set plays are so important nowadays and we fancy our chances of creating goalscoring opportunities every time we get one which can only be encouraging for the rest of the campaign.

All the lads were disappointed for Matthew after his missed penalty but we're a strong group and rallied around him.

He had shown in the three matches before what a good player he is, as scoring five goals in three games testifies.

It meant our perfect record came to an end but on the plus point we didn't lose and we move on. On another night we could have quite easily won the game, so although we were disappointed not to win I'm sure come the end of the season it will prove to be a very well-earned point.

Turning back to today we take on Hayes and Yeading who enjoyed a fantastic first season at this level last term.

I'm sure they won't like to be reminded of the two games we played them but what I am certain of is they don't want to replicate their display here at Kenilworth Road last March.

That game was an example of us taking our opportunities, an afternoon when all of our chances turned to goals.

There will be times this season that we will be frustrated but like we have been in games already, we need to remain patient knowing we have the quality to create chances and cause the opposition problems.

Your support since the season has began has been nothing short of brilliant and I know all of our new signings are amazed at your passion and loyalty.

Please keep it up this afternoon and get behind the lads.

George.
