WE'RE TRYING TO PLAY A CERTAIN WAY - JONES

We could just play 'crash-bang' but we're not looking to, says the boss

Nathan Jones says he is pleased with the progress his players are making as they begin to understand his vision of playing football the way he wants.

The Town have taken five points from the boss’ four matches in charge so far but could count themselves unlucky not to have added to that tally after spurning a number of late chances in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Yeovil.

Yet there is a distinct difference to the way in which the Hatters are playing under Jones – and the manager admits he is encouraged by what he’s seen in his first month at the helm.

“We’re trying to play a certain way but we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel,” said Jones at his Thursday press conference. “The players are adapting well and they’re taking things on board. There’s been a steady progression.

“I could just have a way of playing that’s slightly more ‘crash-bang’, and may bring a few more oohs and ahhs, but that’s not the way we’re looking to play.

“We’ve had real steady progress and we’re looking to build on that week by week.”

While the boss has been happy with his team’s overall play, it has been a lack of cutting edge in the final third that Jones wants to improve on ahead of Saturday’s game at Wycombe.

“We’re working on that, but it won’t happen overnight,” said the manager. “We’re asking players to do certain things and work and improve on them.

“We’ve got players that can do that [be effective in the final third], but it’s all about getting confidence and structure into them so when we get into those areas we know what do to.

“We’re working on that and hopefully we’ll begin to see the benefit.”
