Captain returns to the fold for Exiles test

The Town are set to welcome back skipper Stephen McNulty for Saturday’s League 2 game with Newport at Kenilworth Road.

The Hatters’ captain sat out Tuesday’s 1-0 FA Cup victory over Bury after being red-carded at Morecambe last weekend.

Speaking at his press conference on Thursday, Town boss John Still said: “Steve’s in line for selection. We’ll train again tomorrow, and we’ll see where are.

“The back two [Luke Wilkinson and Fraser Franks] did very well on Tuesday, but I have to take into account that Steve been fantastic all season.”

“And that’s the beauty of the squad isn’t it? When someone as big a personality as Steve is out of it, someone can come in and you don’t look too much worse if at all because of it.

“In Fraser’s case, he had to have his hernia done, battled back hard and his chance has come to play in probably his favoured position.

“He did very well, so it gives me a few things to think about.”

While Still welcomes back the captain, the Hatters will remain without Paul Benson, Alex Lawless, Luke Guttridge and Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu for the Exiles’ visit.

“I think we’re looking to the turn of the year, but not too far from the turn of the year,” the boss said on the Town’s injured quartet.

“Ruddock’s just started training, Lawless is probably a couple of weeks from training, but not too long.

“Benno and Gutts are a little bit longer, but we’ve got by so far and it’s someone else’s opportunity.

“Shaun Whalley’s has come to the fore from not being in it, Luke Rooney’s got himself in it, from not being fit and he would have been in and around it.

“Plus Ross Lafayette is getting fitter. I thought he did very well when he came on against Bury, so we’re getting one or two more options and when they do come back, it will make us stronger in terms of selection.”

Still was also asked if the Town would have any days off over the festive period...this was the answer:
