Luton Town complete the signing of Luke Rooney

The Town have strengthened their attacking options for the final 10 games of the season with the signing of winger Luke Rooney.

The 23-year-old started his career with Gillingham where he rose through the youth ranks to turn professional. He went onto make a total of 57 appearances for the Gills and scored six goals – his first strike coming on his full Football League debut against Exeter in 2009.

His form for the Gills alerted the attentions of a number of clubs, and in January 2012 he signed for Swindon for an undisclosed fee. He joined a Robins squad that contained Jonathan Smith and Paul Benson, and Rooney became part of the team that would lift the League 2 title come the end of the season.

Last season saw the attacker make 18 appearances in League 1 as the Robins finished in sixth place. However, Swindon lost out to Brentford in the semi-finals of the Play-Offs.

Rooney joined Crawley on loan this season which saw him make five substitute appearances before he negotiated his release from the County Ground.

He subsequently joined Ryman Premier League side Maidstone United and has impressed in a number of performances for the Stones and is now available to sign for the Hatters.

Town manager John Still told lutontown.co.uk: “Luke has got the ability to come up with that little bit of magic in games, and that something different is always good to have in a player.

“He’s been doing very well for Maidstone. We’ve watched him a few times and been very impressed. He’s a great character and he’ll prove important to us in the final 10 games of the season.”

Maidstone boss told the Stones’ website: “Luke’s a quality player and I knew it wouldn’t be too long before some clubs came in for him. He’s been superb for us and we wish him every success in the future.”

Luke is available for selection for the Town’s Skrill Premier match against Chester on Saturday and has signed a deal until the end of this season.

He will wear squad number 15.
